Default PT 7.2 Multi-Channel Pans Automation Not Working????

Hi. Currently experiencing something "new":

Pro Tools HD 7.2, Mac 10.4.8, 1.6GHz PPC G5, 1GB RAM

Mixing a tv series and currently working on a simple door pan on my SFX tracks, which are LCR tracks.
I'm panning the automation, say, to the left at 60. Play it back, fine, pans left. Hit stop, hit play again, door is now in the CENTER. Hit stop, hit play, same thing: Center. Drop the cursor in the region with the pan at 60, hit play, Panned Left! Play before the region, comes out the Center again!

This is driving me batty. It, of course, goes away if I shutdown/reboot/toss preferences/switch IO setups, any of those. But now I can't figure how I'm going to get through a mix having to listen for each and every pan........

Any tips? Others experiencing this?

Thanks
