Default Mac audio through PT

Moved a couple days ago to HD Native / PT HD 10 & HD 11 on Macpro 5,1. Can't figure out a way to let Mac audio pass through PT Native, like for listening to Youtube or similar (while PT is closed of course). I had no problems with PT HD3 Accel cards w/ PT 8 HD, but now I'm pretty new to the system including Aggregate etc. I'm on OS 10.9.5 and I'm temporarily using a "blue" 192, which maybe not officially supported but works well in HD 10 and HD 11 (waiting for a Symphony). Any help appreciated, thanks

I run digi out cable from MAC right into the 192 optical input. setup an AUX in PT to hear track. minus side is that you have to have PT open to hear anything

Core Audio, and only real downfall is that the driver doesn't share.

One program can access it at a time

Yeh! Avid needs to improve on their Core Audio driver. It also doesn't play well with other apps. I had some apps that wouldn't even load until I uninstall the Avid Core Audio driver.

Best solution I've found is taking the analog headphone out of the mac and putting it right into your monitor controller (directly to an add'l input or through a line mixer). Eliminates all the software issues and I can get system sound regardless of whether protools is running.

Agreed. Line out of the Mac into a console/monitor controller is fairly seamless.

Avid's CoreAudio implementation seemed so weak I ended up with this: My Avid interfaces feed a Metric Halo ULN8 via 8 channels of AES, which is then summed in the Metric Halo with the computer's CA feed. Not cheap, but it was the only way I could figure to avoid unnecessary D/A/D conversions, and to get guaranteed level match and fidelity match between sources at all sample rates.

best,
rich

This thread question is exactly what I was about to post!
I have PT10 HD with a 96io. I also have an optical cable going from my MacPro to my 96io. With 44.1K sessions the Mac audio sounds great, but when I'm running a 48K session I get a constant stream of digital clicks along with the Mac audio (sounds just like audio artifacts from bad sync). Does anyone else get this?
