How similar are Logic Pro and Pro Tools for sound design?
hello
I currently use Logic Pro and use it mainly for short films and some composing. But mainly for sound design for film. I've always wanted to Pro Tools a try and it does seem to be more common than Logic Pro in terms of filmmaking. Are they similar or are they totally different? Is it that big of a difference? |

It is a matter of taste mostly as there are many users of both who release the hit records we listen to everyday so I would give PT11 a trial when you feel you wanna test drive. You do need an ilok2 for PT11 as the older green key shaped won't work so it has to make sence for you to pony up 50 dollars for a demo. Here it is : http://www.avid.com/Trial/ProTools I think you will love PT11 and after one testdrive there really ain't much comparison so try at your own risk

Re: How similar are Logic Pro and Pro Tools for sound design?
I understand Logic's advantages for composing, and why so many composers prefer it, but when it comes to sound design and/or audio editing I can't understand how anyone could choose Logic when ProTools is available. They are indeed THAT different, for THOSE tasks, in my opinion, and PT is a better tools for that trade. Having said that, I use PT for both composition and sound design because I prefer to have everything in one environment and I've learned to handle MIDI adequately within PT even though it's challenging at times.

Totally agree with you there. The only reason we have Logic X aswell is for the quick midi production and then we import the wav files into PT11HD or 10HD for the production and editing.

As others have said, Logic's strength is as a midi sequencer, not as an audio editor or mixer. Pro tools is much, much better for the type of work you do. That being said, I use both, but logic is really only used for composing.

So it's better for composing b/c it has more included instrumentS? Or why?

Re: How similar are Logic Pro and Pro Tools for sound design?
Not at all. There's an equal number of amazing instruments available to ProTools. The difference is in the ergonomics and display. Writing and editing MIDI in ProTools takes more effort and it's less intuitive. Less helpful. You find yourself spending more time (and thought) trying to adjust your score in PT whereas Logic is more of an assistant with every action.
The opposite is true when we discuss audio. PT is very intuitive and helpful whereas Logic is clunky by comparison. Both are getting better. Slightly. And slowly. ProTools hasn't improved their MIDI implementation is a very long time. |
