Repeat Measures
Hi,
I've been using PT for years as a mix and delivery DAW with music created outside of PT and brought in for deliverables. I am now (attempting) to use PT for music creation and my only DAW. (Thank you Folders and better Midi) I've searched everywhere for a solution to a seemingly simple problem- and i think the problems stems from my misunderstanding of the terminology in PT. As a music based person, a repeat is play m 1 through 4 then repeat back to measure 1. It's a loop, if you will. In many DAWs there is a top level marker that is a Repeat selection and is "permanent" until it's turned off. The DAW would continuously play m 1-4 over and over until the repeat marker is turned off. In PT I've tried every method and can't seem to find this simple device. And try googling 'loop' or 'repeat' and it's a hot mess of info out there. Is there a music oriented person here that knows what this issue is called in PT and who knows how to tell PT not shut the repeat off until I tell it to? Think of creating a drum pattern where 4 measures loops and you overdub all the parts until your pattern is done, then shut off the repeat. TIA! |

Re: Repeat Measures
sketch will allow you to loop clips (section of midi or audio). But beside using the loop playback which will Loop every track in the set markers, you will have to duplicate that 4 bars using ctrl-d (command-d) as many time as you need it.
https://www.google.com/search?q=pro+...5NoPlJuC0As_53 here's an other way of doing it, which comes out to the same, just a bit less key presses https://www.google.com/search?q=pro+...avFGqJwJY,st:0 this is one of the thigns I wish pro tools had that other daws have. |

Re: Repeat Measures
Thanks Manny for your reply.
I'm familiar with the Duplicate function and the Loop function as well-although this is not the repeat measures. I opened Sketch and, while interesting, its what most other DAWS have baked into their platforms and seems like a lot of hoops to program a beat. I'll keep investigating this and post if I find a solution. Thanks! |

I think, but am not sure, that what you’re looking for is Dynamic Transport.
Look up some You Tube videos on it. https://www.google.com/search?q=dyna...&client=safari |

Re: Repeat Measures
Thank you its2loud. This is it.
I knew it had to be in there somewhere. And, for anyone else switching DAWS I highly recommend, as a long time other DAW user, to go directly to the Keyboard Shortcut window in Setup and figure out how to reassign your shortcuts. I'm so glad Avid added this along with track folders. Thanks all for the help! Great community here. its2loud I think, but am not sure, that what you’re looking for is Dynamic Transport. It's a crutch. It makes learning the DAW worse (user manual references, other users' help will have less reference.) It makes whatever you learn nearly incompatible with going to someone else's studio (or someone else trying to help you at yours.) Future updates to Pro Tools with new features could completely break your custom shortcuts (for instance when Avid added open/close folders shortcuts.) It becomes a mess. I've seen this before with other DAWs where people put their old key commands on the new DAW. I know 4 DAWs (3 with different shortcut muscle memory between Mac and PC) so it's like 7 different shortcut setups. It's completely doable just like you can know for any other application (like, for me, Soundminer and RX shortcuts.) Yes, it sucks at first to operate on a new DAW with unfamiliar keys but it gets easier over time and there's often a clear pattern in how shortcut keys are assigned by the developer.

Re: Repeat Measures
Points Taken.
Thank you. Whenever an engineer would come to my studio to track in Pro Tools they would bring their own keyboard, mouse and Fob with their set ups/templates and whatever else to get themselves situated and comfortable. And there is a reset key commands button. This all seemed fine and one of the reasons I like Pro Tools over other DAWS. So, Question: Why is it a bad idea to customize your own rig? Thanks! |

Re: Repeat Measures
For what it’s worth, video editors have been exporting and importing their keyboard shortcuts across multiple video editing software for years.
If you make your own shortcuts for Pro Tools you should know that you can export them and then import them into another studio’s system should you need to as long as they’re running a current version as of 2022.4. If you make a shortcut in Pro Tools and there’s a conflict with another command, it will alert you of the conflict and let you make changes. Do what works for you and your system. |
