I'm a strong believer in clean installs to make MacOS/PT installations that are solid and well-functioning. If you have a spare drive or space to make a separate partition, I would try to make a fresh install of 11.6.3 and PT 2021. Shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours. I bet that beast of a mac will roar with a clean install. Download a Big Sur installer from the App Store and make a USB installer (lots of instructions on the web), install Bigsur, iLok and PT and try it out.
This is a fresh install of Big Sur on a separate nvme drive. The original ssd that came with my mac has Catalina on it.

I am currently using Catalina for work but would eventually like to move over to Big Sur.

I haven't seen any black boxes yet but I have seen strange white flashes when re-sizing tracks.

I made a quick screen recording of it here : https://youtu.be/y7yhipywO80

I am starting to suspect this is PT compatibility problem with Big Sur.

I guess my next test would be to install 2021.12 on my Catalina OS.

Also, maybe I'll test out installing PT 2020.12 on Big Sur.

I'm so glad that there are other users experiencing this issue (no offense). It's exactly as shown in Connor's videos.

It's been driving me mad for - I don't know - years I'd say. Don't know when it started but it's been a while.

I went through many different Macs (Mac Pro 5,1, iMac Pro, Macbook Pro 16", Mac Pro 2019) with different OS and PT combinations, and with different monitor setups, and sometimes this issue was present and drove me bonkers and on other configs it at least wasn't as bad as on some.
I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the culprit was - and I did A LOT of testing with different hardware and software configs.

Right now I'm on Monterey 12.2.1 with PT Ultimate 2021.12 on a Mac Pro 2019 16 Core, with an Ultra Widescreen Monitor running 5120x1440, a 1080p side screen and a 4K TV for video, and PT is as smooth as silk.
Has been like that since upgrading the rig to Monterey for testing.
It was terrible on Big Sur, so my testing drive with Monterey became my main drive for now.

Sorry for the wall of text. I'd love to help tracking the issue down. This sluggishness has been haunting me for so long, and it sucks so bad when you have to edit a lot of stuff.
If I can be of any help I'm happy to dive right in.

I just finished an arduous downgrade of my ol' 5,1 Cheesegrater machine back down to Catalina (from Big Sur) via OpenCore. The drag is, that Big Sur was working really great EXCEPT for ProTools. I'm back on my 5,1 machine for at least a week while the seemingly-defective 6,1 Trashcan goes back to OWC and hopefully a different and not problem-plagued machine comes back!?!

I literally bought the 6,1 machine to get me through the next year or so because I thought that my 5,1 machine was not up to the job in ProTools. Turns out, it IS ProTools itself causing GUI lags, VCA Misalignment, etc., etc., and if they could just be honest about it, it would go a long way…

Truth!! I went with a new Mac Mini with 16GB ram. Works fantastic. I am using my 5,1 machine as a server now for backup. Sad really. I could have used it indefinitely if I could have shutdown long enough to upgrade and debug.

I run PT 2021.12 HDX on a 5,1 cmP running Big Sur 11.6.4. No issues with GUI lag. What graphics card do you have in the 5,1?

I have an RX580 and a TitanRidge TB3 card in this machine, system drive is on a 2TB NVME in a PCIe slot, and 48GB of RAM. The system, especially now that it's on Catalina is rock solid. Highly recommended for anyone running a 5,1 MacPro. There's a few sessions that I'm running at 192kHz with a ton of routing and lots of plugins that will play just fine on the 6,1 that just won't go for very long without a -917X but otherwise it's still a beast. I can run this thing flat out for days and it never overheats - but the 6,1 is just a terrible design. I had to download the Mac Fans app and run the fan at a good clip to stop it from overheating / crashing... The OpenCore boot loader option with the Martin Lo configs are a Godsend for these machines.
