Default Slow fades, redraws on NuBus PT3

I'm having a problem with a friend's NuBus ProTools 3 system running 4.2 software. Recently, it's been plagued by exceptionally slow screen redraws and fade calculation.

It doesn't matter what drives I'm recording to, and Finder copies are plenty fast, so the bus seems to be functioning OK. Playback is unaffected, but when editing multiple tracks, the system is often too slow to be usable. I've reinstalled the ProTools software and checked driver versions. Everything seems OK there too. MacOS is 8.1.

Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks,
