Correction, when I say upgrade, I mean to buy the new install of PT 2018. Right now I have PT 8.0.3 and can't be upgraded.

When did that start? Because you upgraded the OS to a version not supported by Pro Tools 8? If so it may be easier to fix that (roll back the OS version) than go through all this other pain and expense.

Yes. And understanding the motivation/issues here helps. There may be a lot of pain to go through in any upgrade if *all* the issues today could be solved with an OS X downgrade (assuming it's that which caused the problem).

Sure. But if the idea is not to stay with PT8 forever, it makes sense to first update PT using current hardware (which works! albeit experience probably will not be great) and then plan the hardware upgrade when the time and budget is right.

I just want to say that Darryl has a good point.
Personally, I'd rather run a stable PT8/compatibleOS on such an old mac, than experiment w/PT2018/Capitan. Especially if the only reason is the quantize problem which is most probably caused by the incompatible PT/OS versions.
