Default fold down specs - confused!!!!

I am subbing out on a job for some one - reversioning foreign language - say chinese language of american drama on say netflix ...

the 5.1 specs are straight forward - Meet a -24 LKFS ( +/- 2 LKF ) using ITU-R BS.1770-3 measured over entire program

ok - thats something I can follow- makes sense. and sure enough the demo 5.1 wav does that more or less

I was confused about the folddown to stereo.. cos I checked the demo the sent and the max peak on the stereo wav was reading -18dbFS

but got this as specs

Maintain +18db ( -2 dbfs ) maximum level ( true peak) over reference of -20 dbf, achieved by peak limiting and not lowering the M & E volum

which to me is saying I can hit peaks of -2dbFS on the stereo wav's

have they misread it? or mistyped it - or messed up the output or am I wrong?

they have of course gone to bed due to time diff

oh yes they want this by breakfast time

Your assumption (although sadly not your grammar) would appear to be correct, based upon your quote. The example stereo file would appear to be nonsense relative to your text.

Looks like you're on the right track, but dbfs (decibel full scale) are different than dbtp (decibel true peak). That sentence is confusing.

His location is stated as Sai Kong which is in Hong Kong. I would hasten to wager that his first language is not English. How good is your posting on a professional forum in a language other than English?? I think it is brave of him!

Fork, I believe you are correct. "Maintain +18 maximum level" means +18 over reference (which is -20) so, -2dBFS is +18.

Mike, did you go for vacation this summer?
Seems that you need to take a fresh air. Although English is a beautiful and powerful language for communication between people worldwide, not for everyone its a native one. I wish I myself had time to learn it on more sufficient level.
Peace!

I was being flippant. I confess I hadn't checked the op's location. Apologies. No offence meant.

thanks for springing to my defense guys..

actually if I concentrate and write whilst not up against the clock, I could probably string a sentence together in a grammatically pleasing manner!

I could probably even spot a few typo's!

In Mike's defence I did copy and paste the 'translated chinese' specs. ( I do speak chinese to a degree -altho probably quite a bit worse than my english !

Lived in Hong Kong for 22 years, and have just returned home to the UK. ( about 2 hours North of the Shandy swilling southerners that Mike hangs out with :P - Castle Donnington - famous for the monsters of Rock and the Motorbike racing track)

back on topic I do wonder if they have misread the specs becos I have 3 sample movies and all of them have LtRt thats peaking at -18dBFS!

else they mistyped the spec?

yikes!

at least I had nice start to the day with a "thanks your mix was wonderful" text message..

it went down hill shortly after breakfast

Hi Fork-media
that is a quote from the Netflix spec 7.2 I believe. Netflix actually require a maximum true peak of -2dbtp. There wording is odd and misleading :)
Hope that helps
Pete
