Default Pro Tools 11 with Scarlet 2i2

Hello all of you out there. University student here, snooping around with Pro Tools.

I've recently bought a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 interface card and i was told that it is compatible with Pro Tools 11. But from what it seems, i also need to get a 2nd Gen iLok.

I was wondering if this is correct or wrong and what options do i have!

Thank you all

Yes, you need an iLok2 - or iLok3. The license for Pro Tools needs to be on the iLok and that iLok needs to be plugged into a USB 2.0 port in the computer you have Pro Tools installed on. Or, Pro Tools won't open.

If i buy an iLok, do i have to buy a license from AVID for Pro Tools, too?

Yes, the iLok is just a piece of hardware the holds an encruypted license key.

If you are a student you may have access to educational pricing for Pro Tools.

You can also rent the software by the month to see if it is what you need/worth the price and learning curve.

There is a "free" version of Pro Tools. Pro Tools | First that is fairly restrictive and not something I'd personally waste time with because of the restrictions, but you can learn more about it on Avid's Web site. There are many low-cost DAWs available if you want to get started doing audio work. Reaper, GarageBand, Logic Pro, Studio One, etc.

Pro Tools 12 is the current version of the software and what you should probably be looking at. Make sure you have a computer system that meets all the requirements for that. Pro Tools is much more sensitive to systems requirements, especially operating systems versions than most other software. That info is easily searchable on the Web or under "Additional Resources" or "Help us help you" links up the top of this web page.
