Pro tools 10.3 to 2018.

Hello;

I'm trying to move from pro tools express 10.3 to 2018. I bought a new computer which has windows 10, so I was under the impression that I needed to upgrade, for compatibility. I've got the ilok key removed from the old system & the software downloaded for it on the new machine.
My question is should I try to open the PT 10.3 software that shows up in the ilok license manager presently & then try to upgrade it to the 2018, or should I just try to start with the new 2018? I guess what's a little different to me is the ones on the one machine, & I'll be going to the new software, but also on a new machine. I purchased the software from Guitar center for perpetual users upgrading from 9, 10, 11 etc.

I have bad news.

Uh you let some assclown at Guitarcenter sell you a Pro Tools upgrade from Pro Tools Express to 2018....

There is no such thing.

There is for Pro Tools 10, but you don’t have Pro Tools 10, you have Pro Tools Express. You need to purchase a full new ~$600 license.

So you need to go get a refund or exchange/upgrade to a full license.

You could have asked here first. Or read online or called a competent company like Sweetwater or VintageKing. Guitar Center are a joke, staff in their stores typically cannot handle even basic licensing questions, I would not send anybody there to buy Pro Tools software, but I don’t know if I can blame them in this case if you say fronted up there and called Pro Tools Express “Pro Tools 10” like you did above.

Once you get this mess sorted out and the new full 2018 license on your iLok, you just install 2018 and open your old sessions.

Before jumping to conclusions, check out this chart to make sure you purchased the correct upgrade from your version of express. If express came fee with your M-audio or Akai interface then you will have to pay $599. If you got express with an avid product then you can upgrade for $299.

Since you didn’t specify, it’s unclear. Once you sort that out, just do a clean install of 2018 on the new computer along with the plugin package available on your Avid account. Be sure to login to your Avid account when licensing the software so it deposits the license in your ilok account. You’ll then need ilok account manager to transfer the 2018 lcense to the ilok. Also, make sure you have an ilok 2 or 3. Not the old blue ilok 1. Have fun!

I found this from when I registered what I got, back in 2012. It included a product confirmation no., as well as this basic info., & the note at the bottom. I thought that I shouldn’t post the exact information so listed the digits etc. I bought the Mbox & pro tools express was included.
My upgrade purchase, is supposed to work, but I didn’t want to open it until I was sure it will etc. Does this sound like it would qualify for the box that I got which was perpetual upgrade for pro tools 9, 10, & 11?

Back to the original question, there is no reason to touch the old system drive and I would remove it and start fresh with a new system drive(preferably, I good SSD). Version 10 used RTAS and/or AAX32 bit plugins and none of those will work on 2018, so doing a fresh install of only current software will keep things nice and "clean"(devoid of all out-dated stuff). Old sessions should open fine, with some plugins needing to be replaced when you had used something that did not make the "simple" move to AAX64(like the old Delay plugin that cam in Short, Long, Extra-Long versions is now all in one)

It looks to me that since I bought the pro tools express bundled with the m box, and that I desire to go to pro tools 2018 regular perpetual version, then as I've purchased the upgrade at 239.00 I get the new versions for one year with bell's and whistles, & after that I'm back to using it as is or have to go on a subscription plan. I think I have the right needed package, & it should end up working with a clean install on the new machine along with the ilok.

I believe that is correct. Keep in mind what Albee said. Any third party plugs from the old system will need to be repurchased.
