Default Unsteady Mac

System Mac G4 400mhz OS 9, digi 001 PT 5.1, waves native gold bundle.

Last couple of times i've tried to boot pro-tools the mac seems to be taking longer than it used too and infact it has locked up on more than one occasion. Got a 'bad memory' message 'contact you service tech' during one boot up but the system seems to work ok after that. One of my waves reverbs has gone walkabout as well which is slightly disturbing. Also i tried to load another reverb plug during a session and the mac locked again.
The system has run flawlessly for well over three years so this is a little scary.
Any guidance as to what action i should take would be greatly appreciated as i get the feeling this is the calm before the storm.

Thanks in advance.

Ian

Seems pretty clear. Get a utility to test the ram modules, find the bad module, get new module(s).

Thanks DK, please bear with me...

Is there a utility disk i can load into the mac to check the system, or will i have to remove the ram memory and take it to a technician?

Thanks.

I seem to remember there was a way to check the ram in OS9 (have not used OS9 in a long time though), it had something to do with the memory control panel but that's all I remember.

A program like Tech Tool Pro will do memory tests also. Try the Apple support user forums and see if someone can point you in the right direction. You don't have to remove the ram to test it though. Good luck.

Loaded another 256 meg of ram and i'm up and running again. (Cheers dk)
I dont have a diagnostic disk though so i cant tell which of the 3 already installed 128 meg ram sticks is faulty.
Anyone any ideas how to test, i would be grateful.

put the ram in one at the time and the one that seems to crash your system is the faulty one that however takes time and ram is cheap nowadays, so it might be wiser to just buy enough new ram and donate the old ram for someone who has the time.
