Default Opening PT10 session on different computers and sample rates

Greetings,

I am a former Logic user and have taken a gig as an engineer at a project studio that runs Pro Tools HD 10 with 2 Digi 192s and 4 Digi Pre on a Mac Pro.

The owner always records at 24/192.

Since the studio is 1.5 hours from my home I want to take sessions home with me to run on my mac so I can fiddle with mixes and try ideas.

Since I personally can't afford my own PT HD system, I was planning on purchasing my own PT vanilla. As I have read, I should be able to open a HD recorded session in PT vanilla. Am I correct in this?

I am concerned about opening and editing the 192 kHz sample rate we recorded on my personal MacBook Pro. Personally I do not have an audio interface that runs at 192 kHz only 96 kHz

Is there a way to open a session that was recorded in 24/192 on my personal Mac that is running 96kHz so I can work on mixing and virtual instruments? If so, what happens once I save my work on my Mac running 96 and then open it up back at the studio running 192? Will this screw up the audio resolution? or the timing?

The owner of the studio has been in Rock and Roll for 50 years and is a fidelity freak and yes, owns a Pono player.

Thanks in advance

Yes you can open a session created on an HD system on a vanilla system. A few things I would pay attention to is does the HD session use 5.1 audio? Depending on the PT version you're going to be using at home that may be an issue. Another is having the same plugins the studio uses.

As to the sample rate issue I don't mean to be snarky but if the studio owner has been in the rock world for 50 years I sincerely doubt he can hear any difference between 192 and 96 KHz sample rates. Heck age alone will diminish high frequency hearing ability. He's probably only running 192 KHz because he can.

Thanks for the reply Jack. Yes I fully appreciate the pros and cons of 192kHz obcession. Do you have any insight on my question regarding dealing with a 192kHz session on a Mac running 96kHz?

Will I destroy the native resolution working on systems running different sample rates?

Thanks

That's one question I honestly can't answer but can speculate on; I would think that it would change and the studio owner would notice when he'd look at the new session and wonder why it's size is smaller.

Seriously though I'd ask why the studio owner is really working at such a high sample rate but in such a way you don't lose your job.

Or, if it's job you want to keep, buy an inexpensive interface that is capable of 192.

Indeed^^^ I think Presonus has a new one that can handle 192(actually, they have 2 new interfaces that cover that sample rate)

Great feedback folks. A simple 192 interface makes a lot of sense. Now I know why those products are out there.

Thanks!

I have little or no experience with high sample rates, but I thought a next question would be if you have HDs and data thru-put to handle the large amount of data per second of 192kHz.

Shouldn't be a problem unless the sessions are huge like for a feature-length movie. Typical non-orchestral session shouldn't be a problem. I'd be more worried about stable clocking at such high sample rates.
