Where To Find Real Plasma Delay Figures?
I know this topic has been posted a bunch but I'm having a hard time finding actual data. I currently have a 42" SD NEC plasma monitor with a pretty low delay (15ms, 1 field) so up to this point I haven't had any sync issues. I am looking at putting in a 42" HD plasma to allow clients to see actual HD during layback. I tried contacting a couple of manufacturers but didn't get much of an answer. One consumer buying guide website said they had never seen any delay! The way my room is set up I can easily delay my monitoring system, but I would rather go with a cleaner error proof setup (monitor delays are fun during VO sessions). Can anyone post actual delays for specific models? I am leaning toward Panasonic (TH-42PX50U or TH-42PHD8UK). We have a 50" Panasonic in the HD online room that looks fantastic.

Re: Where To Find Real Plasma Delay Figures?
Every Studio should have a syncheck. You would be horrified how many times I have been to Avid edit rooms with Plasma screens and shown the editors that they are 2 frames or more out of sync. They really can't believe their eyes, it also stops them putting the sync errors onto the audio post people, stops them in their tracks.

I'm very aware of Syncheck and how to compensate for delays.
That's not my question. |

Re: Where To Find Real Plasma Delay Figures?
John,
If the manufactures don't know or even realize that there's a delay, why would you trust their numbers? The $250 or so for the price of Syncheck is a small price to pay for an accurate number of the delay amount. Especially in a hi def facility like yours, you shouldn't be without a syncheck to check every room in the place.

Dr. sound is right. The only way to do this is to measure the video latency yourself. I don't think there's any data on this from the manufacturers.

Re: Where To Find Real Plasma Delay Figures?
as i and everyone else has said, the manufacturers will not tell you or the person you get on the phone never heard of such a thing. through the person i bought it through, i got a tech, who told me 100ms. i think just to get rid of me.
when i got syncheck, i found it to be 150!! what's 50ms between friends, eh? ...AND...it depends on your card, data rate of the media, MOJO, with in PT using a FUSE-X or older Decklink, or canopus, or a VVTR so many other factors come in to play here....

Re: Where To Find Real Plasma Delay Figures?
Add to that list variables due to the connection type you are using. In most LCD monitoring I've used, component is less delay than composite or S-Video.

Re: Where To Find Real Plasma Delay Figures?
Okay guys, I get the point.
Did anyone actually read my post? I didn't say I wasn't going to use Syncheck. I didn't say I couldn't delay my monitors to match my monitor. I didn't ask for manufacturers published specs. I was ignorantly hoping someone was going to say, "The new 27th generation Panasony xyz only has a delay of 3msec". By the way, none of you posted an actual measurement for a specific model. |
