Any compelling reason to upgrade from 8.04
I just bought a 003 rack that came with PT8. I applied the 8.04 update to it and am on the learning curve for using Protools.
Is there any compelling reason why I would be better off to upgrade to 9 now as opposed to delaying for a bit? On one hand, I would prefer to wait since PT9 is relatively new, and there are the normal issues with getting software over the maturity hump. On the other hand, if I will have to spend a bunch of time re-learing PT when I upgrade, I would be more motivated to switch now so I don't spend time learning obsolete things and have to spend more time learning as opposed to creating down the road. Thanks |

Re: Any compelling reason to upgrade from 8.04
Some of it depends on your computer(maybe post a Sandra report). You must be on Windows 7. Since 8.0.4 has a serious audio placement issue, and cs2 doesn't fix that at 48K, I would say its worth it(but ALWAYS have a backup plan). I did it early on and I won't go back(even though I can in the time it takes to shutdown and reboot). ADC is great, and it just feels better to me(but I am running a serious machine). If you don't have Acronis True Image Home 11 or something like it, now is the time(before you mess with a working setup).

Re: Any compelling reason to upgrade from 8.04
For most, ADC was the biggest reason to crossgrade. Many also crossgraded for the ability to use third party interfaces but since you just bought the 003 Rack, I assume you want to use that for the near future. You get a little bump in the track count (similar if you had PT8 and the Music Production Toolkit).
For me, the main reason was the ability to take my mixes on the road without an interface. I can do rough mixes on a plane or in the den using only the audio out on my laptop with the iLok USB key. As for PT8, you can only work with mixes when your 003R is connected. There are other reasons not mentioned here but most of us that have moved to PT9 are happy and will not go back. (except the guy on the mac forum trying to sue Avid because he can't get his core audio driver working)

Re: Any compelling reason to upgrade from 8.04
considering the cost to upgrade is only 300 (including an ilok if you don't have one) for LE hardware owners it's a no brainer. There are tons on new features
more I/O, more buses, more tracks, MP3, OMF, ADC. Plus a lot more. |

While the greatly improved feature set has been a welcome addition, I have found the overall stability and workflow to be the biggest boon for me.

Re: Any compelling reason to upgrade from 8.04
The nice thing is that nothing's really changed as far as the basic operation and GUI, etc., so there's not really a learning curve coming from 8.0.4, other than the specific new features.

From what I understand the upgrade to 9 won't always be as cheap as it is presently. Do it. ff
