Default Which mic would you use on acoustic guitar?

Any suggestions for a mic to record acoustic guitar with a Trak2 into PT would be appreciated.

I'm on a budget. I'd like to spend the least and get the most - about $200 to $600 would
do it.

I'm also not sure if a tube or condenser would be better. I will be trying to capture every
nuance of a great fingerpicker and flatpicker.

Silky smooooooth is what I like.

Thanks.

Leon

I have found KM 184's in a stereo pair are the best for capturing the subtle nuances of a great acoustic guitarist - especially mixed with a DI signal - rent them if you can't afford them.

I also like to toss up a pair of large diaphram condensers as ambience/air grabbers about 5 - 7 feet away.

Blending baby - that's how great acoustic tones are made!

Good luck!

I have recently found favor with the Rode Classic but otherwise an akg 414 is always a good all rounder. On a slightly different note, could anyone advise me on a good clip on mic for live recording. I really dont like depending on the pickup signal alone.

akg 451 is a great mic for accoustic guitars. with the trak2 the compressor that you use will make a difference.

I got good results with a single KM 184 pointed towards the 12th fret, naturally most of the sound will be the player and the room.
When going for a rougher sound or especially when recording a dobro I'll bring out my trusty SM 57.

Any Earthworks mic. SR77 is great and in that price range I believe. Absolutely beatiful microphone for any acoustic instrument, including vocals

I think the Rode NT3 in stereo through a Crane Song Flamingo in fat mode (one in, one out of phase) using the 1 foot/ 3 foot micing method works nicely on rosewood bodied acoustic guitars.

I fell in love with an Earthworks(forgot the model...red ones) on Sound Hole and Sony G800 on Frets...pan hard L and R and you get this real cool sound...Mid rangey in the Left and Fret and Bright on the right...great sound....You can hear a lot of this on Jon Secada's new album coming out in the Fall...very cool guitar sound....

Pick up a pair of Marshall Electronics MXL 603s's for $80 each. They are amazing on acoustic guitar, drum overheads, percussion, etc. They sound similar to the Oktava 012's and the Neumman KM whatevers but are a far greater value at their price point.

I also like to use a CAD M9 Tube Microphone ($399 from 8thstreet.com, $499 everywhere else) and sometimes i use either one or two Audio-Technica AT3035's in a stereo setup.

I'd say go for the Marshalls. They are workhorses and supercheap.
