Default Recording problems

why is my track recording a wav pattern even when no sound is being added through the microphone on pro-tools 8

first guess would be a busing error but without more information it's just a guess

From the information you've posted, I'm surprised that ProTools runs at all...
OSX10.9.5 is only qualified to run ProTools 11 and above. Some folks are able to run version 10.3.x but it's unsupported and won't uninstall.
Either roll back your OS to a supported version or upgrade your version of ProTools to one that's supported on the OS.

PT 8 LE (8 M-powerd uses M-Audio interface + an iLok) only uses Avid made interfaces and will not launch w/o one attached
no Alesis interface will work with 8
PT 8 and OSX 10.9 are a total no go combination
