But(!), I only tested couple of sessions with H.264 (which may not the best format for PT, but looked sharp with PT10).
H264 (or any temporal codec) is not a good choice for PT.
But for comparison w/11 it's irrelevant.

Same here.
QT player looks the same as PT 10.
The new video engine in 11 looks bad no matter what settings/codec I try.

Here's to hoping for a fix. Hopefully before 12!

Thanks,

Did you guys try converting to pro res? Pro res is looking good on my system. Just like pt10.

You are using a BM card, no?
Does it look good on a 2nd computer monitor on your system?

Yes. Prores was my first choice.
I almost always use it, has been great on my system, fast, looks good. A little big in files size, but worth it.

But not in 11. It's still fast, but it just looks bad, washed out, dark and dreary.

I fear this is just the way the video engine is in 11 ..... that will really suck.

Thanks for confirming it,

Simple answer is don't use H.264 use DNxHD wrapped as MXF

Even simpler .... try reading the thread before offering useless advice.

The same video in 10 looks/works great.
In 11 it looks like crap.

Simple enough for you?

Yes, hence I suggest using DNxHD.....
H.264 obviously doesn't play back nicely in PT11, you asked which CODECs are better, I offered an alternative. How is that "useless"?
Have you even tried DNxHD as an MXF opposed to a MOV?

Fair enough, sorry for jumping on you, but I tried that codec back on the first page of this thread - no better, actually looked worse.

Regardless, my frustration is with the poor performance of PT 11 and video not those trying to help on the DUC, so apologies, Tom.

How would the wrapper make any difference? MOV or MXF?
If the Avid video engine is loaded, doesn't that take over playback? (hence the new options for quality)

How are you making your MXF files, from what app?

Thanks,
kasper

Although it is using the Avid Video Engine, I have a feeling wrapping as MOV still involves QuickTime. For example, a ProRes QuickTime wouldn't playback without that CODEC, so QuickTime must come in to it. Wrapping as an MXF removes that completely.

Sorenson Squeeze, Episode Pro and Adobe Media Encoder will all do DNxHDs as MXF, free demos of all.
