Mano there is something to this. Small sessions ie. lighter track count less plug ins etc. are not usually a problem. there seems to be a threshold. Anything I would consider a medium to large session (I am on an HD2Accel incidentally) I will usually get the crash on quit/close. Subsequently about 50% of the time I will get Error 600 when trying to launch the next session which means full system restart. Something else...

If I don't get Error 600 I can open one session, if that sessions crashes on quit then the next session to open will hang (spinwheel of death) while opening.

There is a definite pattern here...

Let's try to sort this out, as there's probably more to this than a few bugs.

First, have you tried running Digitest?

Can you give me a complete system profile, including number and types of drives installed, how everything is connected, RAM, card order, other devices attached, etc?

Please use the Tech Support Utility to generate and post an installed plug-in version list.

Are you using DSP Caching? Does the problem go away if you disable it?

Very Buggy... any session with a different playback engine if i want to use the saved engine it crashes every time.. i have to answer no to use saved engine. if i change it before launching session it works. rtas is not good older sessions where plugins had plenty of cpu won't open without pulling plugs. The funny thing is the le version on my other computer works like a charm..

The system is a dual 1.8 G5 with 4G of ram
1 core card, 1 Accel Card.
Hardware is a 192

4 Firewire Drives connected in a chain from the single Firewire 800 port.
The first 3 drives are Glyph GT050Q, the 4th drive is a G-Drive Q.

PCI from top to bottom:
Core
Accel
Dual UW SCSI card (ATTO I think)
Dual Monitor Card

There is a Glyph Chassis with 2 UW drives connected. The issues I'm seeing are present whether the session is running from SCSI or a firewire drive.

Other attached devices...Ethernet Hub, and USB hub.

I will disable DSP caching and report back after a couple of days to see if that does anything. I assume that's in prefs?

Boy I'm glad I didn't apply this update yet. I've been hearing a lot of bad things. I'm on 8.0cs3 with Mac OS 10.5.7 and I haven't had a problem in months! A few plugs don't like my buffer size at 512, but that's it. I think I'll wait for Snow Leopard compatibility, and then wait that out for a few months before updating

Yesterdaynight i was creating/ preparing sessions, so there was no audio involved. Guess what... no problems shutting down the session.
I'm going to test and provoke this today to see if there is consequence.

hey guys,
i have been working in my home studio now for a couple of hours trying to duplicate what is happening at my work rig.
i have opened and closed sessions for the last hour straight and not a single crash.
these are 2 identical systems.
mac pro dual core intel 2.66/16gig ram/ OS 10.5.8/ PT hd 3/ 8.0.1

i wont sleep until i find what is different between these 2 systems.

i am running rock solid on 1 and crashing constantly on the other.
same plugs/system/ram/ everything.

all was rock solid on both systems until i updated to 8.0.1

i'll figure this out and post.

Create a session using the 96 or 128 voice playback engine, fill up the DSP with plugins from several different suppliers (some Waves, some McDSP, some Digi), close the session and watch it quit. If it doesn't quit right away, load up another session using a different voice allocation engine (48 or so voices), then close that session. It won't be long before it crashes on close.

I'm so relieved to hear that others are having this problem too! I thought it was a bum system on my part. I was just going to live with it or downgrade to 8.0 cs3. Imagine doing final mix tweaks for several different songs while the client waits for a reboot after every second song...

When it gets really bad, I trash the prefs and it works for a week or so before it gets crazy again. Hope this helps.
