I actually tried it at 200ms and I liked it even better.

I did that too before.

I used the first compressor to chop the attacks of the vocal cos there was a big problem there.
I then used the second compressor to do a normal vocal compressing job.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The more compression you use on each individual track during a mix, the less the mix will get screwed up by stereo or Mastering compression.

Compression, if used right, is your friend.

If one just wants to use compression maybe on all tracks just to smooth out and control dynamics a bit what would be a typical ratio, and how much gain reduction would you aim for?

For smoothing I usually set a Ren comp at about 1.15:1 and now more than 3db of reduction medium attack/release ( dictated by each idividual song, of course ).
