Allen (and any others with a suggestion)

Not that it applies to my question, but I am a 002R user and built an Allenstein machine 2 years ago. It still rocks! Thanks Allen!

I am also the director of a small music institute and want to ask your advice.
I want to provide laptops to students (50-100 units) as part of their tuition.
Here is what they will need:
-HD: 60-80 gig
-Internal Wireless 802.11g
-Internet, email, Office Suite, standard stuff
-Reason 3.0, Ableton Live, PTLE or other sequencing/recording software, Finale scoring software
-a "small," light laptop
-Good battery life
-Reliable (Our IT dept buys only Dells and a few Macs currently)
-I want to keep the cost of the machine as low as possible. They don't need a full recording solution. I will provide a few worhorse machines for that.

I am open to MAC or PC

What would you recommend?
What question am I forgetting to ask?

Thanks

Doug
Anyone?
Doug,
There are many answers already posted above. The Gateway and E-Machines laptops are working great with PTLE with just the internal drives. I like the Mac Powerbooks and iBooks for tracking and light mixing and they come with everything you will need in the other departments. Apple has a special student discount program. There are three choices, all of which will provide your students with what they will need. The Windows XP laptops usually don't come with office software however and require a seperate purchase. The Powerbooks have Appleworks which works well and allows you to save in MS Office formats now.

Allen

The first one is desktop memory.

The second one is laptop memory.

If you want to be sure you're getting the right thing, you should go to www.crucial.com and use their "memory advisor tool" for your specific PC.

Yea I did that spk but they don't have the model of my Gateway on there. So that's why I was curious.

FWIW, I use a Dell 8600 with Pro Tools LE 6.4, and contrary to the laws of technology.....IT WORKS!

Our G4 broke and in desparation we tried my laptop.....runs just as good as the g4!

Last night I was playing back 22 tracks( very few plugins) and recording 4.
Smooth performance with no stutters or chokes.
Bounces like a champ.

1.6Ghz centrino
512MB ram
DIGI 002 rack
Pro tools LE
WinXP SP2
80GB WD external USB 2.0 (recording drive, and yes, USB connection....not firewire)

Just thought Id share the success story with everyone

I wanted to tell you guys that I did a Davec on a Compaq Sempron-based notebook, it has a 2800+ Sempron processor and 512 gb of ram (448 really, Shared video memory), with my Mbox, scored 28 Tracks at 128(HW Buffer)!!!, no errors....is a Compaq M2000...not bad..., it passed every test...(not tested with reason though... )
Thanks for the heads up. I didin't get a Compaq Sempron I got a Sempron 3000+ laptop from TPG and it works. Just got the laptop yesterday and the Mbox2 today....so far so good, still early days.
How cheap is this deal. I was prepared to spend more money picking from the Digi compatibility desktops but this one from TPG works fine (so far)

I installed it on my M6805. DaveC went from 32+13 to 32+8 @64 buffer setting. That is after installing SP2. I also tried SP1 and it didn't make much difference with PT7. It ran fine, same results but maybe a hair easier to get to 32+8 on the test. Keep in mind though that SP1 is not approved for use with PT7 by Digi.

I have heard some getting improvements with PT7 on the AMD64 Laptops. I was not one of them. I actually went for this upgrade from 6.4 beacuse of the expected performance increase and avoided 6.7/6.9 because of the hit. It's not a critical loss but I would have liked have seen none. Overall though the features and the plus plugs are probably worth it.

32+16 after 7.0

Don't know how it happened but my HP ZV5160us didn't work with PT 6.7 or 6.9 (incompatible chipset) but now it works wonderfully with PT 7.0 so far~! Could they have worked out some compatibility problems in the update? Allen, and new laptops we can add?
I'll post the DaveC results when I get a chance.
I'm thinking about getting a Dell 700M now and seeing if it works. I would love to carry a lighter notebook around for work that will still love PT.

The Dell 8600 is now a "recommended" laptop with PT 7 and 002R. Loaded it today and aside from a couple of access violations it ran solid. Haven't run it enough to know for sure, but it appears that it's wise to delete DAE prefs and other folders that needed deleting with 6.9. About the same results as 6.9 on the davec.

Good luck.
