Re: iMac and SSD. USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt 2?
BTW if all this mess is confusing enough... just wait to late next year when USB 4 should be out... which (optionally) includes Thunderbolt 3. Yikes.

I didn't know that USB 4 is coming our way soon. Here we go again with upgrading computers, drives and all other devices to accommodate this new technology. It is fast so it is worth it I guess. I'd like to upgrade my iMac as well so I'll wait to see what comes out featuring USB 4 tech as far as computers and drives go. And you are also right that it is annoying that the USB Type C connector is so small and flimsy. Very annoying. Thanks again for all the advice Darryl!

Re: iMac and SSD. USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt 2?
Quick question for Darryl or anyone watching.
I formatted my new T5 drive but there was no option to make it APFS (as suggested), only HFS+. Not sure why since I have the latest OS.

Read a bit about APFS... it is different with how it works with disk partitions, uses more flexible containers than hard partitions. |

Re: iMac and SSD. USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt 2?
Hey,
I am on 10.14.5. I think I made it APFS. Does this look normal? It shows on the left in the drop down: Samsung Portable SSD T5>Container Disk6>GENERAL AUDIO (GENERAL AUDIO is what I named the disc)

Yep that's an APFS volume in an APFS container as you would expect.

iMac and SSD. USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt 2?
A word of caution using APFS on external work drives.
If you’re using it solely on your system, no problem. But, if you plan on using this drive on another system that is running an older Mac OS, it won’t work. There is a utility that will allow you to read from it, but not write to it. The other issue is that Apple only recently released the APFS documentation (for want of a better word) to developers, so drive utility software such as Diskwarrior can’t currently rebuild/repair APFS formatted drives. Whilst Darryl is right that APFS is a more robust, modern and better file system, particularly for SSD drives, personally, I wouldn’t currently use it for an ext. project drive for the above reason. YMMV, but it is worth being aware of those points. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by Sardi; 09-08-2019 at 01:24 AM. |
