Definitive answer on Dyn Comp 3?
I have heard and read different answers to this question and am hoping to get resolution.
When using the side-chain EQ controls, if I EQ it to the high end, is it just using the highs to trigger the compression, but still effecting the entire signal, or is it only effecting and compressing the high and and letting the lows pass unaffected, this behaving like a multi-band compressor? As a further example of my question: Does it act like the de esser with the HF only selected, or with the HF only un-selected? |

Re: Definitive answer on Dyn Comp 3?
The compressor works on the full bandwidth, but is more sensitive to the range that you boost. To compress just a limited frequency range, you need a multi-band compressor(like Waves C6).

This is why this technique is called : "frequency concious dynamics control".
Same idea when : - you boost the harsh SS or SSH frequencies in the compressor detector so it keeps them under control. (deessing) - same thing but boost the boomy freq of an acoustic guitar. (deboom) - instead of boosting, cut a lot of low end out in the detector, so the compressor doen't squash an instrument or the mix. - cut the low's and hi's in the sd gate detector. This way the bd and hh don't cause false triggers. There are units that let you dynamically apply varying eq boosts or cuts to the signal depending on level fluctuations. They are dynamic equalizers.
