Default Waves C4 vs McDSP MC2000

Has anyone had a chance to compare these two great multi-band comps? I need to fork over the dough for at least one of them.

I have the CompressorBank, but only the C1, not the Renaissance Comp, so any insight would be helpful.

The C4 is excellent, but it takes up mucho mucho DSP. Never tried the MC2000, is it even out yet?

I don't have either, but I have Compressor Bank and the Renn Compressor... they both sound great, but McDsp is much more flexible and varied sonically. In some ways perhaps too flexible, unless you're really into tweaking to get a sound. My one complaint with the Renn Comp is that if the three modes they have don't work for you, you're kind of stuck. And it has tended to kick in too much on the low end of a mix. But with the multi-band compression combined with an adjustable knee, it should kick ass. I'll probably buy that as my "mastering" eq and use the CompressorBank on individual tracks. And since the C4 is mainly a mastering piece, it shouldn't be too big a deal if it takes up a whole chip.

I really like C4. I use it on everything. It does take a lot of DSP, but it's worth it. Vocals, bass, kick, guitars, whatever, and of course as a mastering compressor. It works great, and the interface is very intuitive.

Personally, I like TC MasterX. And the new version is a 5-band processor (coming out at AES).. the 3-band one already works great for most of what we do.

Y'know, I forgot another one that I have, but haven't played around with much: the DUY Shape (part of the Everpak). It's kind of like a three-band comp/expander. I've used it to radically alter sounds, but not as a "mastering" tool.

Anyone who's familiar with it care to comment?

DUY Shape....granted, I've been a long-time booster of Xavier's plus, but Shape continues to be my universal Mastering Plug Of Choice...there's a preset called "Try Me On Final Mix". I honestly still don't know what it does (and Xavier hasn't been able to explain it), but whatever it is that it does sounds great.

The C 4 is awesome, you need a mix system to make it work. It works!

If you're comfortable with the ui of Compressorbank or Filterbank, then you'll quickly be achieving serious results with the MC2000. Like it's cousins, it sounds wonderful.

Any multi-band compressor can be a dangerous tool, though.

Hi to all on the list,

Well, Eric... I promise I'll give a detailed explanation on this forum about the famous "Try Me on the final mix" preset in the Shape plug-in. I'm getting everything ready for AES in L.A. right now and I'm against the clock. But I really will give you full details about it.

Oh, and by the way... If you happen to come to the AES Show, please come and visit DUY at the Digidesign stand. We'll show you our next release for TDM: the SynthSpider. It should be shipping in January... We've got the pre-final version showing at AES.

If you'd like to download a Press Release for the SynthSpider, you can get it here:

DUY SynthSpider Press Release in PDF format

I look forward to seeing you in L.A.

Regards,

Xavier - DUY
