Melodyne Essential, that came with PT 8.0
I just upgraded to PT 8.0 and received the Melodyne Essential software that came with it. When I go to place Melodyne on a track it prompts me to upgrade and goes on to let me use in "demo" mode. I went to the Melodyne site and its pretty confusing, all the different versions etc.
I read some of the manual and got the same confusing crap. Is Melodyne Essential worth learning about? Can I use it successfully with just the "Essential" version? I would like to be able to tweak some vocals, but will not be able to buy any upgrades anytime soon. Any thoughts or experiences with this? Thanks Todd |

It does basic, manual pitch correction and timing adjustment and that's about it.. But for free, it does those things pretty well. And if you try the demo features, then you might decide that it is worth paying a bit for them...

Re: Melodyne Essential, that came with PT 8.0
Thanks for the quick reply. I'll play around with it. I really only wanted to use it for basics anyway. When I open it on a track, it seems to open as a re-wire and not a regular plugin, then i hear it's audio coming through my computer and not my protools set-up?
There is no quickstart guide, so to the manual i"ll go. Thanks Again |

Read the manual. You rewire it to PT and you have to export/import files into/out of it but it works very well. Just be patient and you'll be amazed the first time you drag an out of tune blob to it's correct pitch. Trust me.

Re: Melodyne Essential, that came with PT 8.0
I've used both Melodyne and auto tune extensively and can say that Melodyne is heads and shoulders better then autotune. It's much more intuitive, the interface is much more user friendly. I haven't used essiential, but if you do like it and wanna upgrade, I highly can recommend melodyne plugin, it's a bit easier not having to import export, but 'record in and out'. It works more the way I think you were hoping essential would work

I can certainly vouch for Melodyne. If you spend a few bucks and upgrade, you won't be sorry. Especially now with the new DNA feature coming out soon. Been beta testing it for a while, and it's more impressive than anything autotune can do. Audio editing to the next level.

Re: Melodyne Essential, that came with PT 8.0
Man, I fear DNA more then I fear Lucifer himself! And I love editing, I eat melodyne, EA and BD everyday, part of my balanced breakfast. But DNA? no, man... I have just spend the last 2 and a half weeks editing a record, all the standard pop rock, radio ready stuff; drum edit, sample enhance, bass/guitar edit, vox comp/pitch, Vox double comp/pitch/align, BV pitch/align.... you wanna through individual note editing in there!?!
I rue the day guitarist and keyboardist learn about DNA. "umm dude, I don't think that was the right chord, I think you should be rocking the minor by bar 4" , "whatever man, you can tweek it".... ugh!! I almost punched a bassist square in the kisser for saying that to me a few sessions ago.

OP, Melodyne is handy-dandy, worth the couple of bucks to get more features in the soon to be released (Monday, Nov 16) Editor. Hope this helps.

Re: Melodyne Essential, that came with PT 8.0
Thanks for all of your replies. I'll have to get used to the rewire vs. using as a regular plug. Looks like to upgrade to the new Melodyne editor will be $250.
My wife would like to know when the madness will end. Thanks Todd |
