PT not "Officially" Recognizing 003--Desperate!

I've searched numerous threads and fora and can't find anyone with my problem, much less a solution.

My problem: PT doesn't show the 003; not in playback engine or in the I/O settings.

Here's what happened: everything was working fine until last night when PT dropped the 003 and I got the message "your I/O settings have changed..."

Then the 003 showed as "offline."

There was nothing that I did or device that got disconnected to cause that; it just happened. I tried rebooting everything, the computer, the 003, all to no avail.

I also tried the trick of holding down the two buttons on the 003 to bring up the "reboot firmware" prompt. It works on the device, but when I open up PT, there is no prompt to click on.

What's weird is that the 003 sort of works. none of the control inputs work, but the iMac still plays audio (which is routed through the 003 to external speakers), including PT sessions.

Also:

I can record through two of the analog inputs. 1 and 2 both record audio, at least what my mic will pick up. For whatever reason, 3 and 4 won't even let me enable the record button.

I've tried uninstalling the 003 drivers and reinstalling them (11.1.2), but to no avail.

I can't check the 003 in the playback engine, because it doesn't show up there.

I've tried uninstalling PT, but I can't even seem to do that. some of the pieces I'm supposed to trash aren't even where they are supposed to be.

At this point, I'm considering just reinstalling the OS, but I'm not sure if even that will do the trick. Any help is greatly appreciated!

1. Make SURE you have the correct driver (it's all too easy to install the wrong one. I know!)
2. Might need a new cable, but DO NOT hot-swap the firewire cable. TURN EVERYTHING OFF FIRST!!!

Definitely check which driver you downloaded, there is one for the rack and a different one for the console. Had me going for several days..

One more detail; Set OSX to NOT use the 003 as the sound card(Core Audio). The idea is to let the 003 handle Pro Tools audio ONLY. Once you get that working, there are a few ways to get other sound to come out of the 003 and studio monitors(but let's get to first base)

And bear in mind that the version 11 003 driver is only for PT11.

If you co-install PT10 on your system you also need to co-install the version 10 003 driver.

You then need to select the V10 driver for the playback engine in PT10 .... it shows up as '003' ... and the V11 driver in PT11, which shows up as 'Avid 003'.

And as a previous poster said .... do not select either of these in system preferences as your general sound playback or recording device. Dedicate the 003 to pro tools and any other software that has its own inbuilt audio device config settings.

Thanks for the replies! as far as I can tell, there is only one driver for both the 002 and 003 systems (racks and consoles). 11.1.2 is the number.

I tried a new FW cable, switching 003 ports and also switching Thunderbolt adaptors.

nothing has worked. At this point, I can't record with PT and will probably do a pay per incident support ticket.

problem solved: I bit the bullet and called support. anyhow, the advisor thought it might have had something to do with switching Thunderbolt ports on my mac. it has two and I use both: one for my external FW drives and the other for the 003. we did a bunch of power-on/off cycles and other stuff.

There was nothing intuitive about the process and I honestly cannot pinpoint one exact cause.

the big takeaway for me was to be cognizant of the order in which I power-on/off my firewire devices. Turn on FW first and turn off FW last. He said that doing it out of sequence can cause problems. Anyway; my problem is solved for the time being.

Makes perfect sense...my 003 is always on before i boot the computer, that way it can be "seen" and initialized during startup. Glad you got it sorted out.
