Default Doing business in Michigan...

I was listening to NPR this afternoon and heard that the State of Michigan is offering tax incentives for CD projects and music videos to be produced within the state. I know they were offering incentives to the film industry but didn't know that there were similar incentives for the recording industry.

....of course I do know of a studio in Michigan's capitol city that could use some work.... LOL!!!

If you do a song about cars, they'll give you a Chevy!

Seriously, Michigan is realizing how business UNfriendly they've been for years. Everything in that state was focused on the big 3 auto makers. Now they've launched campaigns to attract new kinds of businesses. They have a major campaign underway to get folks to vacation in Michigan, as tourism in that state is actually huge revenue. I did hear a news story driving into Grand Rapids not too long ago talking about incentives to have major films come film in MI. So, I'm not surprised if there are tax incentives to locate recording companies there, too.

Still, Michigan has a long way to go to get out of its mess. I live literally 1/4 mile from the MI state line, so am up there all the time and have lots of friends and contact there, so get a lot of first hand info. Right now, it ain't good! I talked with a guy yesterday in West MI whose state taxes on his business amount o 18%...that's huge on top of federal. Total taxes on profits come to like 65% between state and federal. Not a good way to attract business. So, if recording studios get a tax break in MI, it IS significant, as they tax business so heavy in the first place.
