MBox Pro 3rd Gen Connection Problems
Hi,
I have made a video of some connection problems I am having with my MBox Pro. I suspect I need to invest in a new, recommended FireWire card for my PC and replace the cable (it doesn't seem to be too tight a connection in its physical connection with the MBox). Do you think this might fix the problem? I'd like someone with some expertise to please advise before I drop the $$$s. Here's the vid where I am not touching anything to cause the connection to drop / pick up and the power light on the MBox is flashing. You can see Device Manager and the MBox software struggling to maintain a connection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RTQT004VdM I have tried all optimisations and this has had no impact on this issue. I have read widely on this issue but have failed to find anything to fix the issue. My MBox worked fine for the first few months. Here's a Sandra report:- Computer Model : GigaByte Z68X-UD3H-B3 Chassis : GigaByte Desktop Mainboard : GigaByte Z68X-UD3H-B3 BIOS : Award (OEM) F10 10/12/2011 Total Memory : 15.92GB DIMM DDR3 Processors Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz (4C 8T 3.81GHz, 3.8GHz IMC, 4x 256kB L2, 8MB L3) Socket/Slot : FC LGA1155 Chipset Memory Controller : Intel Core (Sandy Bridge) DRAM Controller 100MHz, 2x 8GB DIMM DDR3 1.6GHz/1.33GHz 128-bit Memory Module(s) Memory Module : G.Skill F3-12800CL9-4GBXL 4GB DIMM DDR3 PC3-12800U DDR3-1600 (11-11-11-29 5-40-13-6) Memory Module : G.Skill F3-12800CL9-4GBXL 4GB DIMM DDR3 PC3-12800U DDR3-1600 (11-11-11-29 5-40-13-6) Memory Module : G.Skill F3-12800CL9-4GBXL 4GB DIMM DDR3 PC3-12800U DDR3-1600 (11-11-11-29 5-40-13-6) Memory Module : G.Skill F3-12800CL9-4GBXL 4GB DIMM DDR3 PC3-12800U DDR3-1600 (11-11-11-29 5-40-13-6) Video System Monitor/Panel : Samsung SMS24A450 (1920x1200, 30.6") Video Adapter : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 (7CU 336SP SM5.0 1.85GHz, 512kB L2, 1GB 4.2GHz 256-bit, PCIe 2.00 x16) Graphics Processor OpenCL GP Processor : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 (336SP 7C 1.85GHz, 512kB L2, 1GB 4.2GHz 256-bit) Compute Shader Processor : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 (336SP 7C 1.85GHz, 512kB L2, 1GB 4.2GHz 256-bit) CUDA GP Processor : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 (336SP 7C 1.85GHz, 512kB L2, 1GB 4.2GHz 256-bit) Storage Devices Seagate ST1000DM003-9YN162 (1TB, SATA600, 3.5", 7200rpm) : 932GB (C:) (E:) Samsung SSD 840 Series (120GB, SATA600, SSD) : 112GB (P:) TSSTcorpCDDVDW SH-222BB (112.3MB, SATA, DVD+-RW, CD-RW) : 107MB (D:) Logical Storage Devices Sys Rsrvd (E:) : 100MB (NTFS) @ Seagate ST1000DM003-9YN162 (1TB, SATA600, 3.5", 7200rpm) Pro Tools (P:) : 112GB (NTFS) @ Samsung SSD 840 Series (120GB, SATA600, SSD) Hard Disk (C:) : 931GB (NTFS) @ Seagate ST1000DM003-9YN162 (1TB, SATA600, 3.5", 7200rpm) SP_4_80_ML (D:) : 107MB (CDFS) @ TSSTcorpCDDVDW SH-222BB (112.3MB, SATA, DVD+-RW, CD-RW) Peripherals LPC Hub Controller 1 : Gigabyte Cougar Point LPC Controller LPC Legacy Controller 1 : T2 87-28 Audio Device : Gigabyte Cougar Point High Definition Audio Controller Audio Device : ASUS GF110 High Definition Audio Controller Audio Codec : nVidia 0016 Audio Codec : nVidia 0016 Audio Codec : nVidia 0016 Serial Port(s) : 1 Disk Controller : Gigabyte Cougar Point 6 port SATA AHCI Controller Disk Controller : Gigabyte 88SE9172 SATA III 6Gb/s RAID Controller USB Controller 1 : Gigabyte Cougar Point USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 USB Controller 2 : Gigabyte Cougar Point USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 USB Controller 3 : Gigabyte Etron USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller USB Controller 4 : Gigabyte Etron USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller FireWire/1394 Controller 1 : 8738 VT6306 VIA Fire II IEEE-1394 OHCI Link Layer Controller FireWire/1394 Controller 2 : Gigabyte VIA VT6308 1394 OHCI Controller SMBus/i2c Controller 1 : Intel ICH SMBus Printers and Faxes Printer : Send To Microsoft OneNote 2010 Driver (1200x1200, Colour) Printer : Microsoft XPS Document Writer (600x600, Colour) Fax : Microsoft Shared Fax Driver (200x200) Network Services Network Adapter : Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (Ethernet) Wireless Adapter : NETGEAR WNA3100 N300 Wireless USB Adapter (802.11g (ERP), TKIP, 54Mbps) Operating System Windows System : Microsoft Windows 7 Home 6.01.7601 (Service Pack 1) Platform Compliance : x64 |

Re: MBox Pro 3rd Gen Connection Problems
Firstly, I want to thank you for taking the time to post a sandra report right from the get go
Reading your specs I see two things. First your pro tools software, is it on the P: drive or on the C: driver? Pro tools (the software) has to be installed on the C: session where the OS is. Second, you're using a via firewire card. This could be the problem right there, Via seems to cause a lot of incompatibility, so much so that most manufacturer of hardware I know of recommend using a firewire card that has a TI chip set. |

Re: MBox Pro 3rd Gen Connection Problems
Thank you very much for responding. I really appreciate it.
My Pro Tools software is installed on my C: drive with the OS. I read somewhere that it's best to install ProTools in a drive of its own and had intended to keep it all on the P: drive but, to be honest, I don't know how to achieve this and whether I've already done the recommended thing. I'll go research it a bit more closely... unless you have any advice you can give me on this score? Thanks also for advice re. the FireWire card. I will invest in Avid's recommended card and hope that fixes the problem. |

Re: MBox Pro 3rd Gen Connection Problems
You can keep the software on the OS drive, and the session files (audio data, midi data etc) on a separate drive, that is the recommended thing to do. If you can get a third drive, having your VI's samples on that one will be even better.
Check the SIIG firewire cards, I've had good success with those. |

Re: MBox Pro 3rd Gen Connection Problems
Nice one. Thanks Man.
I bought the SIIG card from Amazon so I'm hoping that will do the job.... I'll let you know how it goes.... |

Re: MBox Pro 3rd Gen Connection Problems
Here, the same problem. My card is also VIA, but in the last 2 years I never had a problem. I'm playing my works temporarily with a USB Fast-track borrowed. I hope to resolve this soon. I think the problem may be the gigabyte motherboard
