Note regarding "pinging" a DD server
Folks,
Chris Markle here from Aspera... For those that are not aware, Aspera is now responsible for development and support of the DD product line, having purchased it from Digidesign in late '07. I've noticed an uptick recently in people getting "faked out" by the results they get when they use the "ping" network test tool to test connectivity to a DD server. The DD server deliberately _limits_ ping responses so as to protect the box from possible ping-based denial-of-service or flooding attacks. The limit is roughly 10 ping responses per minute, allowing an initial burst of 20. What this means is that if you "ping flood" (ping -f ip-addr) the box you will see a lot of ping replies not get received. And if you send more than 20 slow pings (ping ip-addr) after 20 replies you'll start getting dropped replies. Just making you all aware of this so no one's heart skips a beat if the suddenly notice that pinging is not that reliable. I'd recommend that if you do use ping to test connectivity to the box, do it in small doses and you'll never reach this limit. Thanks! Chris |
