Re: Room Calibration - ATSC Standards - Help
Resurrecting this thread because it's driving me nuts.
I'm doing some work on film and I want to ensure my mixes are at least "in the ballpark" with respect to the norm. So I figured I'd just calibrate my system to the standard and then play it by ear (literally). However, I'm also running into the problem that the OP had. I calibrate using the ATSC file, or Katz's file, or a pink noise generator set to -20dBFS RMS (AES-17) and to a reading of 76 SPL on my EXTECH meter set to C and slow. Then I play the ATSC speech file and it's SKULL SHATTERINGLY LOUD! Like, crazy loud. Seriously. Then, in order to quantify how out of bounds the loudness is, I turn down my monitor volume until the ATSC speech sample is at what sounds to me like a good, aggressive level and then replay the pink noise at this level and measure the SPL. It reads 61! (again, set to C and slow). So the "standard" calibration is 15 dB too loud for me and my room! 15 dB?!! My monitors are 3 feet away from me in a partially treated room of about 1500 cu ft. so nothing unusual. Either my ears are way too sensitive or everyone else is half-deaf or my SPL meter is busted or the standard is crazy or ? Does this speech file sound right to everyone else? What am I missing? |
