Default Anyone running PT9HD with a 002/003?

In our lab, we may install PT 9 HD on one of our stations with a 002 and/or 003 interface. I see that officially Avid is supporting this combination, but I'm just curious to see if anyone was using it and how it was working. This is a college setting and the HD upgrade would be used primarily to add surround mixing capabilities.

When PT9 HD is running on an LE system you do NOT get any of the features of an HD system. It will be as if you are running the regular version of PT9. You are much better off buying the LE-PT9 crossgrade:

If you're running HD software without HD hardware, then you do get the HD software features, just not the hardware features. So it's the equivalent of PT9 and Complete Production Toolkit 2, which does include all the surround features, etc.

I'm running HD 9 on my 2007 Imac with a 003R and it's working great.

How were you able to register the PT9 HD software though? Do you own another HD rig?

In my case, I recently bought HD Native. This entitled me to a free upgrade to HD 9 (any HD system bought after 9 came out would qualify).

Upon registering the hardware card and the software card (the yellow one), it placed the Ilok license for HD 9 (which includes a license for HD8) in my Ilok account.

Also, upon registering, The full installer for HD 9.0.2 was placed in my Avid account, which I downloaded and installed (after uninstalling LE8) on my Imac.

I'm using my Imac right now because I don't yet have Mac Pro, so I haven't even gotten to try my HD Native card yet. But at least this way I can run the software with my 003R.

I guess one thing to point out is that no HD interface needed to be hooked up for me to successfully download and install the HD 9 software. And when I launch Protools, it actually does say "HD9" as it's starting up, as opposed to just "protools 9".

Well this could be a problem for the OP because he would need to own an HD system in order to even register the PTHD...

Not really... the HD 9 iLok asset can be found on ebay or here on DUC from time to time. I'm currently running PT 9 HD software with Mbox 2 Pro (which will be replaced by the RME HDSPe RayDAT soon) and it works very well.

You're batting a thousand today.

This, also is not true. He would only need to own an HD system to qualify for the upgrade price. Anyone can buy HD software whether they can utilise it or not..

By using HD software with an 003 you get all of the same functionality as using PT9 with the CPTK. I own 2 003 systems one using PT9HD one using PT9 with CPTK.

The only thing I cannot use with the HD system are the TDM only features. Surround sound, VCA's, everything else work nicely.

As far as buying a license goes.. they're for sale all the time for around $600. That gets you a license for PT9,8, 7.2 and 7.4 HD. A bargain.

Are there any advantages to running HD9 instead of PT9 with cptk with a 002R or any LE hardware or non Avid HD Hardware? If so, what are they?

Yes. If you decide one time that you want the TDM setup and get cards from the eBay, you can just plug them in and it will work. It won't work this way with the CPTK. The other difference is that the PT HD 9 is one iLok asset while PT 9 + CPTK are two assets (without X-Form and Neyrinck). But essentially it's the same.

But the splash screen looks better when it says Pro Tools HD...
