Don't do it!
Unless you want to track live bands or listen 'off tape' with Vo artists.

HD Native is way more powerful than HDX1.

Completely agree! However... maybe not with
iMac 27" Late 2013 - 3.5GHz i7 - macOS 10.14.4 • RAM 32GB DDR3, GPU NVidia GTX 780M 4GB
I'd invest in a new computer and HD Native way over an HDX card though.

I grimace and get nervous when I try to open my TV mix sessions on HDX1. They barely open. It's a PITA. HDX2 is where things start to get good.

Seriously, if you don't need low-latency, HDX1 hardware is a downgrade compared to Native.

... which is why people are expecting evolution version of the card, but nobody really knows.

Sidechain delay compensation. Get an hdx2 or more and be happy.

And so we are at a HDX2, in what Thunderbolt 1 dual PCIe-slot expansion chassis? ... hanging off an old iMac. So maybe the real needs here are purchasing a new Mac, a Thunderbolt 3 expansion chassis (unless you want to cough up for a new Mac Pro Cheesegrater), Digilink interface(s) (and maybe a Digilink license if they are used units), and that *bargain* HDX card, and hoping that all works OK with sessions that might use lots of UAD plugins.

I kinda suspect this HDX upgrade idea has hit an iceberg and the band is about to stop playing.

As already suggested by others... if there are "mixer" issues I'd be thinking of a computer upgrade before anything else... and with ARM Macs coming ugh might hold off on that unless it was really needed. All would depend on how much it's needed to grow the business in the next ~2 years.

I just upgraded to a new mac pro. Previous was a 5.1 with expansion chassis. For the number of years I ran the 5,1 im not mad at all upgrading into the new tower.

I'm actually researching tb3 chassis for an 16in macbook pro. So i am not tied to my studio.

The tb3 chassis slows down the tb port on macs to tb2 speeds. Not good.

What's in the chassis that requires more speed? Yes TB3 is twice as fast as TB2 but if there is PCIe 1.0 card in the chassis it requires max 8GBps (as in works full speed with TB1).

In principle though if a box has TB3 connector it should also have TB3 speed available.
