Simulating Television Speakers

How do you A/V people out there simulate the crappy sound of a television while mixing for TV? Is there an EQ plugin setting that does a good job? I know that the best thing would be to have similar speakers in my studio for this, but right now, that's impossible. I'm sure I could figure out a master EQ setting that would do the job, but I'm a little pressed for time. Anyone have any plugin settings or other advice?

I have noticed in some of my recent mixes that I did for DVD's.......while played on crappy TV speakers I have noticed that low mids seem to be making some mudd. Im new with mixing for TV, I could use some direction as well.

In my experiance with small screen audio, we have always had a generic 14inch televison on the patchbay for this, you cant really "eq" the sound of the components and case. Funny enough for the Mr. Hell show the TV actually had final say in some instances.

I use Auratone speakers. They're useful for every mono monitoring. Can't say if you'll able to find them new, maybe a used pair ( but you only need one)

I took a small pair of speakers used for plugging into the little audio out on your portable CD player or laptop, a 1/8" plug, and send a mix through them. They don't get very loud, but you can definitely hear what your mix would sound like on laptop speakers. Once you learn them, they are a great tool. I also use Auratones in addition to larger systems and a boom box as reference. And the mono button on my mixer.
