Default Ok...so I'm new to the gear and PT, but...

I'm trying to get my Eleven Rack to show up on my Mac, Avid updated my Pro Tools LE 8.0.1 to Pro Tools 10 and I've not been able to get it all running. PART of it, I now learn, is that I have to spend more money for an iLok so that it will run? Really? Someone please clue me in...I looked at the iLok..$50..you can get the dongle with it so you don't snap it off...$6...I get all of this. Oh, well, the price doesn't include tax but you want the iLok? Ok, well that's $50 plus tax, plus $13...oh...the Dongle as well? Well, that adds another $6...oh, and there's tax on that, so...Oh, I forgot, there's also $13 for shipping on that...so your total with tax and shipping for these 2 items that are $56 is just over $85...may we have your credit card number, please?

No...I don't think so! Really? $13 to ship each one of them? Two things I can put in my wallet?

So...can someone tell me...do I HAVE to buy the iLok to use this stuff? It's a miracle that I got this anyway, because Guitar Center did some trading with me for it. My wife's job was eliminated so it's tough enough for us right now and in order for me to get out of this what I want it's going to cost me almost $90? I don't have $90. Is there ANY way around this? I never plan on needing the iLock anywhere that I don't have my laptop. Surely there's a way, isn't there?

Sorry for the cynicism, but that's like buying a car and then being asked, "Oh...did you also want the keys? Well, that's extra..."

Help! And thanks for the read!

Yes - you need the iLok or iLok2 - better off with the iLok2 at this point. You can buy them from someplace that doesn't charge tax or shipping - Musicians Friend or Sweetwater for instance. The Guitar Center sells them also, so you'd have to pay tax, but no shipping.

The guy who sold you this should have told you that you needed it. I think a lot of times they just assume that everyone in music has one or knows of the requirement - they're pretty pervasive.

I really appreciate all your help...I found out in the space of 10 minutes what I've been trying to find out for 4 days!!...now...to other business...

Do you use the Eleven Rack? When I plug it into the Mac, shouldn't it show it or a menu come up or SOMETHING? The manual is a joke, so I don't even know WHAT you can do with the Eleven Rack from the computer...ideas?

Don't own one, but would like too. I'm pretty sure you'll need to install the driver for it. Then it should show up in your audio devices in system preferences.

At this point you should be able to use it as your audio device for any software. However if you want to use the computer to edit patches I'm pretty sure you'll need pro tools installed. So you're back to needing the ilok. Unless...

Just had a thought. What version of osx are you running? If you're on snow leopard, and you got pro tools 8 (and an authorization code) you could run that without an ilok.

if you'er worried about the iLok stick out get a short USB extension cable
iLok sells one at a nice markup but I see usable cables from time to time at clearance centers fo a few buck (like $3~5)

Drivers stopped being included with Pro Tools with version 9 and forward... They are a separate install

You can find them in the link below
