When you're going to import the mix back into PT. E.g., you mix a tune, bounce it down to split mono at 24-bit 96 KHZ, import those into a new session for mastering.

cary,
"Dual Mono" is PT's native format. If you are importing back into a PT session leave it at that.
"Stereo interleaved" would be the format most other wave editing, CD burning applications understand.

hope this helps,
a

Lemix is right. And it's not really a matter of convention so much as of convenience. Why have PT go through the work of interlacing the two channels and then splitting them apart again? It not only takes more time, it takes twice the disc space.

ok thanks! I never knew that. I just had two replies on another forum saying that if you are importing for a submix or if mastering in PT it needs to be interleaved.... If PT works only in multimono, then that makes sense to me. I do have one question, when opening the bounce menu why does it automatically go to stereo interleaved by default?

Also, if I am bringing my mixed 24 bit tracks for mastering, should they also be in multimono?

Because that's what most users need most often. With many projects, such as song demos, post approvals, radio segments, and spoken word products, mastering is often incorporated into the project session, mixing straight out to the final product.

If your mastering engineer works in Pro Tools, multimono will import more quickly. Otherwise, interleaved will be slightly more convenient.
