Re: New Computer for Pro Tools 10
Alright cool, computer looks good . My interface needs would be recording vocals and then midi controllers like a piano and drum machine to make beats with.

Re: New Computer for Pro Tools 10
+1 on knocking down the GPU spec...you don't need a full on gamer class caard though I did spec the entry level Nvidia Kepler class GTX 640 which can be had for $100 or less with a little shopping. I would also tone down the ram since PT won't use it for now. You can always add more when the time comes and maybe even cheaper then. My 3930k rig has the Asus Sabertooth x79 Mobo which is a quad ram config so I went with 16GB which even that is overkill. Price was right.
Anyway you are in Top Fuel class with a 3930k build...this will rock, guaranteed!!!

Re: New Computer for Pro Tools 10
Not sure what your budget for interface is(and one of the 3rd generation Mboxes would likely be fine) but you might consider the Focusrite Saffire LS56. While it appears to be overkill, the 2 "liquid" preamps might prove to be well worth the extra cash Having heard "character" preamps, I would not be happy with only stock "plain vanilla" preamps for all my work

Re: New Computer for Pro Tools 10
Thank you for all the advice, I will take heed to a lot of it. Focusrite Saffire LS56 looks nice, but it doesn't come bundled with Pro Tools 10! :-/ I will still be considering it though, it looks nice. Thanks again!

Re: New Computer for Pro Tools 10
There is no need to donate your money on an X58 system. I really don't know when the disinformation started on Z77 and Ivy, but I have it up and running along with many other people. Google Ivy Bridge and DAW's....
The Intel 4000 video is perfect for Pro Tools. Why spend money when you do not have to? |

Re: New Computer for Pro Tools 10
There is much disinformation about systems here. And there is some pretty good information also. I think some folks have overspent for X58 systems on a belief that that was the only option currently. This of course is not even close to true.
I got an Ivy 3770K in NJ for 250.00! That is a huge saving over some of the CPU's that folks are currently buying. Now, I am not knocking anyone's system. (Hold on let me add some of these...) I see no problems with watercoolers, SSD's for system and for projects. I have the Ivy Intel 4000 running like a champ. More money in the bank! I also have not install my Ti Siig card, the "unsupported" chipset is working just fine When people said that it wouldn't work, I knew it would, why wouldn't it? After a few more systems get up and running, maybe some more people will jump to the Ivy system instead if paying up. |

Fwiw I believe the recommendation for not using internal graphics came from avid. And I don't believe anyone is saying don't go z77/ivy. They're saying the 2011/6-core rigs are the most powerful solution as of now. Not that the z77/ivy is a slouch by any stretch of the imagination. They're probably over kill for a majority of folks. And the reason I went x58 was hackintosh "support" and used prices. I just bought a 6-core proc which brings the cost of my build up to about $1000. A little less once I sell my 930. Hard to do that on a 2011 based 6-core build. But that was right as 2011 stuff was just coming out. If I were to build now I'd go dual 2011/e5 Xeon.

Re: New Computer for Pro Tools 10
We would love to see a complete build spec on a Z77 system, with details AND a Dverb score. I don't claim that they CAN'T work, only that they are less proven. We like it when a new system works(but we all want to know how well and are there any caveats)
