Re: Pro Tools HD 10.0.1 crash/freeze on GigaByte EX58-UD3R + W7 sp1 64bit Ultimate
I am absolutely telling you that your CPU and MOBO are set to run 3 channel ram. That is why everyone who did this build bought and used the memory that we did. Look at my Sandra report. You will see 6 sticks of matched ram. If I didn't have 6, I would have 3 sticks of matched ram. It's a triple channel rig.
Again, you may need to bump your memory voltage a bit too. Hope this helps, Greg

I can only see 4 ram slots on my motherboard. 3 white and 1 blue. http://www.gigabyte.us/fileupload/pr.../3103/1150.jpg Turning off HPET in bios did not help unfortunately. I never had this short freezing problem with mbox pro on the same motherboard. It would rather crash windows from time to time, but not as frequent as now with native. Could there be an cpu issue? I will try the 3 sticks of matched memory route first. |

Re: Pro Tools HD 10.0.1 crash/freeze on GigaByte EX58-UD3R + W7 sp1 64bit Ultimate
Chrisdee,
You have the EX58 motherboard rather than the X58. The EX58 board only has 4 slots for ram whereas the X58 has 6 slots. Read your manual. It tells you which 3 slots to put your 3 channel memory - they are the same color. The "cut sheet" on the Gigabyte site also tells you about the performance increase you will see with the 3 channel ram. We can address setting your ram timings and voltage when you get your new ram. If you want 12GB, then you need to buy 3 sticks of matched ram that are 4 GB each (it is sold in sets). Go to the Gigabyte web site and refer to the approved memory chart for your MoBo. There are some other things we can work on, but getting the right ram in there and setting it up properly is the first, best thing you can do. Also, what brand power supply and wattage did you use for this build? We need to make sure you can adequately power everything. You should also go back and read the sticky thread about about your particular build. Pay particular attention to bios settings, etc. You will see a lot of discussion about people having trouble by leaving the ram at default settings. If you have done your build correctly and properly set up the bios and performed at least some of the Windows tweaks (turn off Aero) you should have a screaming PC. It's not that hard, we just need to make sure you've covered the bases. Another intermediate thing that may help try is turning off hyperthreading. My system runs better with it off than on. In PT I set it to use 4 processors at 85%. Greg

Re: Pro Tools HD 10.0.1 crash/freeze on GigaByte EX58-UD3R + W7 sp1 64bit Ultimate
Good advice above^^^. I run this same mobo and yes, it does run triple channel RAM and really should have 3 matching sticks for either 6GB(which I run) or 12GB. Timings will need to be set for your specific RAM as well(the AUTO setting is awful). As to the power supply, check the +12V rail(s). If you have split rails, then you should have at least 18A per rail. If its a single rial, then 50 or more would be safe. An i7 950 cpu can pull 18A at full tilt, so starving it for voltage is possible with a too-small PSU. With a single rail supply, that +12V is handling a lot of stuff(cpu, fans, graphics, drives....)

Re: Pro Tools HD 10.0.1 crash/freeze on GigaByte EX58-UD3R + W7 sp1 64bit Ultimate
Ok. I am still having freezes even after changing ram as suggested.
I have manually set the ram to 1333 in bios. I have disabled hyperthreading and turbo boost in bios. Any other ideas ? |

Have you manually set the ram timings and the voltage?
Greg

Re: Pro Tools HD 10.0.1 crash/freeze on GigaByte EX58-UD3R + W7 sp1 64bit Ultimate
The voltage of my new ram is 1.5V. In bios the auto setting is correctly showing the ram to be 1.5V so I did not bother changing this from auto.
Should I change voltage to manual ? I had to set the frequency manually as the auto setting set the frequency to 1066. After I changed this setting manually in bios the frequency is now correctly showing 1333. Im not shure how to set ram timings. I have to se the manual. |

I can find anywhere in the manual how to set ram timings.
Where can I find the values ? |

Re: Pro Tools HD 10.0.1 crash/freeze on GigaByte EX58-UD3R + W7 sp1 64bit Ultimate
chrisdee,
First, download CPUID CPU-Z and run it. There will be a chart generated that show what your timings should be for the speed you are running your ram. Start reading on page 35 of your motherboard manual (MB Intelligent Tweaker) and read through all of the pages on memory settings. If you change "DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD) [Auto]" from auto you should be able to enter the timings that you got from CPUZ (I changed mine from [AUTO] to [EXPERT]. The CPUZ will report ram timings without the multiplier. (I run my ram at 1200 Mhz so I use the setting from CPUZ for 600 MHz.) Also, can you find the actual specs on your ram? My computer will crash constantly if I run the memory voltage at 1.5 volts (although that is my default setting.) Hope this helps, Greg
