Default External drive question

I'm getting set up with my new Mac Pro. I was using a Buffalo usb/firewire 500gb ex drive with my PC. The only disc I'm finding that came with it appears to be for Windows- before noticing that it said "Windows" (duh) on it I tried installing and obviously didn't work. I'm new to this Mac world- should there be a Mac disc that came with it, will it be non Mac compatible? Might I be able to download a driver for it (I looked quickly at the Buffalo web and didn't see any tech assistance). Do I need to get a new one?

The HD is showing up on the Mac- just getting the "transfer only" message, wants to make a copy on internal drive when I try to open a file. Workspace won't let me change to Playback/Record.

Thanks guys- more questions to follow! I appreciate your help.
Jim

No, there won't be a disk for Mac. You should just use the Disk Utility to erase the drive, making sure it's formatted Mac OX Extended. You can find the Disk Utility at MacHD>Applications>Utilities.

Sorry- you have to talk to me like I'm a kindergardner...
Am I understanding correctly- I can get the drive to work using functions inside the Mac, but "erase the drive"- I will lose what's currently on it? Not a big deal, as I don't have anything serios on it yet, but I'm assuming there'd be some way to save the stuff were it important? Sorry if I'm being ignorant.

Yes, you can typically drag and drop the files that are currently on that drive to another drive for storage while you erase it. Then copy the files back.
