A standard optical ADAT cable is all you need. You can find them at Best Buy, Sweetwater, Guitar Center etc. Sometimes referred to as a Toslink cable in the consumer world. Don't be tricked into buying some type of premium optical cable like Monster since its digital cable and it's only transferring zeros and one's. After you have transfered the track's into Pro Tools make sure to set the clock back to internal.

Most of mine are made by HOSA or Livewire. Best Buy also used to sell them under the Dynex brand. Any reasonably well stocked music store should stock the cable you need. They may called a ADAT cable, Lightpipe Cable or TosLink cable.

No. Any of the ones I listed in the previous post will do.

I got my optical cable in the mail!

Can you attach pictures on here?
I want to attach a screen shot of my 1814 software. I will just write it out:

Under "digital port selection" there is the option of selecting

input: adat or spdif
output: adat or sdif

spdif input port: optical or coaxial

(I assume you select optical, but that did not work, maybe due to some other settings.)

Under "sync source", you can select internal, external, or word clock.
(none seemed to work)

Then, in Pro Tools, what types of tracks should I be using, MIDI tracks? Audio tracks? I don't see an input for the ADAT on Pro Tools, but when I make a MIDI track there is a Firewire 1814 input, channels 1-16.
Should I make 8 MIDI tracks and select channels 1-8?

Thanks so much for your help!

Also, I don't need to have 1/4" cables coming out of the ADAT into the 1814, right? All I need is the optical cable to capture the 8 tracks?

INPUT = ADAT
OUTPUT doesn't matter

SPDIF INPUT = OPTICAL (although you're not using SPDIF)

SYNC = EXTERNAL

Since you've changed your IO you need to rebuild the IO as far as ProTools sees it. Go into your IO settings and click the DEFAULT button. You should now see your ADAT Inputs. These will then come up as selectable on your 8-audio tracks as sources (NOT MIDI). If not, look in the manual (I'm doing this from memory) as it's all spelled out very well there.
