Default SampleTank is misbehaving

Or I'm not too bright. One of the two.

Every Instrument plugin I use automatically generates sound when I play my MIDI keyboard after selecting its respective channel. But can SampleTank be so easy? No. When I select its channel, my MIDI controller generates sound for my first instrument plugin. I'd love to hear the sounds in SampleTank, but I can't.

I'm a noob with MIDI, in case you haven't already determined that.

Help me out, gang... I know I can count on you.

It sounds like you may have the default thru instrument (Setup->Preferences MIDI tab) set to "first selected MIDI track"? (I just helped someone else with this about 15 minutes ago.)

Also, certain versions of Sampletank require that you select an actual audio input on the track that you have it inserted on.

What should it be set to, if that is indeed the issue?

Thanks very much for your input.

It should be set for however you want to use it. If you want the first selected MIDI track to be your default instrument, then you should set it that way. If you want it to be a specific hardware device, you should set it that way.

Details about what the default thru setting is and what it does are covered in the Pro Tools Reference Guide in Chapter 19 (page 363 in the 7.4 guide).

Keep in mind that when setting it to the first selected MIDI track, just selecting the Track that you have Sampletank inserted on should alleviate the problem.

I'm dealing with SampleTank 1.1

"first selected MIDI track" is what I want it set to... I'm only doing one track at a time. But SampleTank does not receive MIDI signal unless I go into setup and change my settings as you described, and even then it generates no sound - even when I set the input to one of the input channels on my MBox.

At times it also locks ProTools up entirely and I have to restart it. PTLE 7.3 on XP SP2

I'm setting up a stereo instrument track to run SampleTank - am I going about that the right way?

Thanks for taking the time on the not-so-experienced... I for one truly appreciate it.

Then you definitely need to upgrade, IMHO. Seriously.

Is it the lite version that comes in the ignition pack? Or the full version?

Also, you will need to set audio input of the track that Sampletank is inserted on to be a valid hardware input. The audio from that input will not pass through the track at all, but older versions of Sampletank need it set like that to function correctly.

Yes, but you need to set an audio input on the Instrument track like I mentioned above.

It's the version that comes on disc with Amplitube LE (the first version) and T-Racks. It came with my hardware.

Since I had to do backflips to register it (IK has quite the reg process) I was hoping it was the full version. I could be wrong. But an upgrade at this point would be fiscally impossible (the spirit is willing, the wallet is weak).

I'll try assigning the input again, and see where that gets me. If I keep hitting a wall, do you have any further advice beyond a much-needed upgrade?

Thanks again,
-L

That's the lite version. And they have improved the registration process since that software was released (so long ago...)

The update would be/should be free. (I could be mistaken about that; it's been a very long time since I used Sampletank SE 1.1.9) It should be available from your account in the user area at the IKMultimedia page, and you should also be able to download it from the Digidesign Ignition Pack page.

Not really anything that I haven't mentioned. The input setting on the track is definitely a must for the old version, though.

You might also want to check out my Sampletank tutorials on www.ptnewbie.com
