Oh? Care to explain that they're considered below the Xeons? From what I've read it depends on the application. For example the Westmere doesn't have avx support but the i5/i7 do and if you want to run NI's Massive X you need that.

Because Intel.
Because Xeons can be multiprocessor.
But mostly because Intel. That's how they classify them. Xeons are workstation and server chips. This really isn't up for debate since the maker and all OEMs classify these chips this way. Sure, these different product lines are getting updated (with additional instruction sets) but that still doesn't take them out of the overall hierarchy.

Even specifying "Core i" isn't enough as even those have multiple generations now. And there are Core chips for laptops that don't perform the same as the desktop chips. Core i chips are the middle of the pack chip for Intel (only the low power chips below them) and what they consider are for consumer model computers. This isn't some kind of challenge but just the way Intel (and all their product partners) has structured their chips.
