Default PT9 to PT10/11 Upgrade - iLok Concerns

Hey all,

Forgive me if this is already posted somewhere on this forum, which I'm sure it is. There are lots of threads about iLok issues and licence surrender problems but I'm not sure which (if any) will apply to me.

What are the current pitfalls with iLok when performing this upgrade?

Is there a knowledge base/FAQ in regards to the steps necessary to upgrade 9 to 10/11?

Thanks for any advice.

I'm not aware of any problems with a simple upgrade from 9 to 11. I think some people ran into problems with the upgrade from PT9 or 10 with Complete Toolkit to HD11, because there's a few similar sounding upgrade paths.

But for regular 9 to regular 11, there's only one choice and it's pretty hard to screw up.

Specifically, this is the page you want, and select "Upgrade from PT9":

http://shop.avid.com/ccrz__ProductDe...t=&&store=shop

At some point it will ask for your Ilok ID, be sure to enter that correctly.

NOTE: Be aware that you will need an Ilok 2 to do this upgrade, the Ilok 1 won't work.

If you find that you are still unsure or not comfortable with this, then you may want to just purchase through a dealer like Sweetwater, as you can call and talk to an actual salesperson. It's the same price and you get it just as quickly (it's an activation code sent automatically).

Sorry I should have been more clear as I already have the correct upgrade purchased (through a third-party). I am particularly concerned with iLok issues where the PT9 licence is surrendered, but the PT10/PT11 licences are not delivered to the iLok account for some reason. Maybe this is an issue that is resolved already?

Have you already installed PT10/11 to your hard drive? If not, make an image of the drive with PT9 installed (I use Acronis true image home edition). That way, if you have problems getting 10/11 licenses sorted out, you can always revert back to 9 while working out the issues. I don't think you will be surrendering your PT9 license, just because you are upgrading.

You don't have to surrender the license UNTIL the new license is delivered to your ilok account and you try to move the new license to your actual ilok where the old license resides. Once you try moving the new license to your ilok and your PT 9 license is recognized then and only then will you be asked to surrender your license for PT 9.

I am a huge fan of Acronis and use it all the time. Curious, when you do a backup of this kind, do you do a Full Backup or Incremental? I always have done full backups but wow they take up a lot of room when you have a few of them.

That makes sense now. Thanks for clarifying.

I personally do a full backup, probably because I don't fully trust the incremental backup. I keep only the latest 2 or 3 backups on an external drive that is used exclusively for backups, so the space requirement isn't really an issue for me.

Default Re: PT9 to PT10/11 Upgrade - iLok Concerns

Just about to upgrade from 9 to 10/11 and I'll love to confirm a few things before I do.

Currently my PT9 license is on an iLok 1. As mentioned earlier in this thread, when my PT10/11 license is delivered to my iLok account, I would need to surrender my PT9 license. I will be putting the PT10/11 license on an iLok 2, so I wonder if the PT9 license will still need to be surrendered (because it is on a separate iLok)?

I just am trying to make sure I have a backup plan in case this upgrade goes bad (which seems to happen sometimes...)

I will have a full backup of my PT9 system drive to revert to in case all hell breaks loose. Hence the reason for me wanting to retain my PT9 license.

Thanks for your help all!
Andrew

Yes, it's been said multiple times. If upgrading from Pro Tools 9 to Pro Tools 11, you have to surrender the Pro Tools 9 license.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought perhaps the need to surrender PT9 was due to them not being able to reside on the same physical iLok.

Many thanks,
A
