Crossgrade - Pro Tools 101, and Educational versions
As you can probably tell from the title, I'm currently doing a degree in audio technology, and as our course is an Avid sponsored training partner, we pretty much have to do all our work on Pro Tools. I was curious, since most software comes with an academic discount, is there any likelihood of one applying to the Pro Tools 9 crossgrade options?
I can imagine some responses of 'it's cheap enough!' (not for M-powered though) but you know, students aren't the richest folk and as most people will know, college resources are fantastic, but are no real substitute for having the software at home to play about with in your own time. Also, this is probably a question more for my lecturers, but as part of our course we study the Pro Tools 101 qualification, anyone got any idea when Avid are going to officially update this? Or when it's likely the new Pro Tools 101 book will come out with updates for version 9? |

Re: Crossgrade - Pro Tools 101, and Educational versions
have you tried logging into the educational store? i haven't recently but that's where i bought my upgrade for PT8 with the discount
Digi/Avid was pretty quick to update the info when PT8 came out.. they released PDFs to our school before the printed textbooks came out.. i think we were learning PT8 by January in PT101

Re: Crossgrade - Pro Tools 101, and Educational versions
Well I just spent some time trying to find the UK educational store and can quite confidently say that if it exists, it's hidden in a very, very obscure sub-menu somewhere. I created an account and logged in, but nope, nothing I can see. I'm more than a little tempted to wait a bit then buy a cheap version of the crossgrade from a US store, even with shipping it will beat the whackjob exchange rate they've applied to the UK prices.
With regards to coursework PDFs, that's good news if they do it as we've all just blown £25 on the 101 book otherwise. It'll probably be at least a while before uni upgrade their systems to win7/PT9 (although I spotted some MBOX 3s in the Mac lab the other day, they're rather nice looking). On the plus side I'd imagine there's not a great deal of change in the 101 content anyway as it's all your basic bread and butter. |

Re: Crossgrade - Pro Tools 101, and Educational versions
i think your instructor has to add you to the educational store.. it used to be MyDigi, but obviously that's gone now so i don't know. I couldn't even log in with my old settings so i can't help..

Re: Crossgrade - Pro Tools 101, and Educational versions
I'll have a word with him when he's stopped jumping up and down about PT9 then and see if they can do that. Since the tax man and my last job owe me a combined £1200 and my new quad core i7's left a smouldering hole in my pocket I'll probably wait until new year anyway, then blow it on a crossgrade and one of those sexy new Axiom 61 second gens.
However, if someone does have access to this store I would be interested to see what kind of price they may be offering for Edu versions of PT9. I'd imagine my entire course would be in your debt actually :) |

Re: Crossgrade - Pro Tools 101, and Educational versions
in the past the educational store had most software marked down by 50% so conceivably it might be 125 / 175 to crossgrade

Re: Crossgrade - Pro Tools 101, and Educational versions
That would be pretty awesome if they do it. I'm currently lookin at a second hand Mbox 2 for £200 with LE, serials et al, so that would be like £325 for Pro Tools 9 to use with my Profire 2626 and a spare Mbox that will work with an LE8 install on the old XP laptop while I'm on the move.

Re: Crossgrade - Pro Tools 101, and Educational versions
I'm pretty sure that Avid did away with the education store. I think they do an education discount through a third party online store now, and I don't think they give us anywhere near the same discount that we used to get.

Re: Crossgrade - Pro Tools 101, and Educational versions
Yeah, I checked Studica the second it got announced, nothin on there, but I know M-Powered is about £100 so around 50% off the retail on that. Just got to wait and see if they offer anything, I think I may email Avid and see if they say anything on the subject.
