Default Pro Tools HD 9 Software Upgrade - From what?

What version of PT HD do you need to own to take advantage of the HD 9 upgrade? Do you need to surrender the previous license to get it?

Also, is there anything that the $599 version of PT 9 will do that the HD 9 version won't?

The specs to me are a little unclear there BUT I believe that the HD Version will be able to comm. with HD hardware while the normal PT9 wont

Well not sure if it will require a surrender, previous PT never have, I think, so maybe it won't.

The new PT9 (non-HD) has many of HD's features, like ADC, and timecode rulers. But it will only do 96 tracks (and assume therefore 96 voices).

HD will now do 512 tracks, and 192 voices.

If you buy or own the Complete Production Toolkit (now the only bundle option, as the DV toolkit option is dropped) you can get your track count up to 128 tracks, and get VCA and advanced automation.

So basically it sounds like ProTools 9 and the Complete Production Toolkit will get you the equivalent of an HD1 (minus the TDM).

The real weird thing, ProTools is $599. The complete production toolkit, which seems to add only surround panning, a handful or more tracks, and VCA mixing, costs like two grand still? That thing should be about a $199 uprade!

Looking at the comparison lists...

WHO would want to purchase PT9 with CPTK for $3 Grand if PT HD9 which has identical features and more costs $600. Makes no sense to me. Or can the PT 9 HD only be run with HD Hardware in the CPU

Perhaps I am dumb and not seeing the obvious... ??? Any thoughts

PT 9 costs $600 for the new basic functionality (which is a lot)

but I think you can't buy PT9 HD - without owning either nativeHD card or HD tdm card system.

to get the full software functionality you need either
- PT9 + new toolkit = $2600 new
- PT9 HD included in PT HD native = $3500 and includes hardware features
- HD TDM rig upgraded to PT HD9

so to get the full set of features (more I/O than 32 tracks, more voices etc) you need one of the above

I'm excited about PT9 instead of LE for lots of reasons.
We'll need to wait to see the new TDM cards to get actually excited about PT HD I think.

Weird. If that's true, it just made my old PCI PT HD core card a LOT more valuable.

See my post in the other thread - HD will now be tied to hardware and someone will have to enter a valid serial number from their HD hardware to be able to purchase the upgrade.

You can own any version 7 and up and, yes, you have to surrender the license, but the HD 9 license is a bundled license with both Pro Tools 9 and 8 on it.

Does that include 8.01?
