Default Tiger install: Clean or update?

Did you guys do a clean install or did you just update your system?

I'm going from 10.3.8, any suggestions?

TIA,

Erik

I just updated. No problem. i would back up first though.

NOTE: watch out if you have the DotMac Virex 7.5 installed. It has a process that will grab 99%of your processor. You have to uninstall it with the installer disk image and use 7.2 if you want. Also you will want to give it an hour or so for Spotlight to index your drives before you try to do anything intensive.

hth,
jim

IMO, it's always best to do a clean install. ESPECIALLY with PT.

If you are in a hurry just update to Tiger but I would have to agree that clean install is always nice if you have the time and energy. I like to be forced to clean up the system and backup files too so I enjoy reinstalling the OS.

I did an update. If you have alot of virtual instruments, this is the best way to do it.

A guy at the Apple Store told me to update the OS (and everything else) to 10.3.9 before updating to Tiger. Said it would be smoother doing that than updating from 10.3.8 or older. Any thoughts?

The only real question I have about Tiger is the Spotlight issue. If it indexes files as we're recording, will that slow things down? I know there's a "Privacy" section of Spotlight to turn off root folder indexing but do we have to tell it to ignore audio drives everytime we hook up a previously unmounted drive? Or is this whole thing a non-issue?
Thanks.

"If it indexes files as we're recording, will that slow things down?"

It should only index files once when Tiger is first installed, after that it indexes files as they are saved so recording shouldn't be effected. If you connect a removable hard drive, it will index it, you can tell it to ignore that drive, if it's always the same drive it should remember which drives/folders not to index.
