Default PCI HD Accel cards, Magma pci chassis and newer PCIe Macs

I currently have a PCI HD3 Accel system with a Magma Expansion chassis and a G5 dual 2gig power PC. If I want to upgrade my Mac, do I have to cross grade my cards and chassis as well?

you could only get the PCIe host card from Magma and keep your chassis and cards (assuming it's a PRE64)
it would be your cheapest rout, you would probably be able to afford a 4th or 5th card to go into your chassis

Thanks. I was hoping that was the case.

Hi,

As you are currently running on PCI then i don't think you would currently be using a Magma PE6R4 as this is a PCIe only chassis.

A PE6R4 is definitely the was to go as it is the fastest Magma have made and is latency free!!

What chassis are you currently using?

Chris

I have a similar question, I have a Digidesign 7 slot 64 bit PCI Expansion chassis (is a copy of the Magma 64 bit chassis, just with Digidesign printed on it) with a HD 7 Accel in it, is it possible to get a PCIe host card for it?

No, you have to get the new Magma chassis (around $2000) if you go to a PCIe based mac. No way around that. I just asked Magma since I'm thinking of going intel Mac.

magma is very confusing on this issue. i called them once to ask the same question as i have a p7r4 chassis. turns out that i can run this as a 64 bit instead of 32bit and can get a pcie host card for it yet they told me that i would have to upgrade the guts of my chassis or get a new one.

it makes no sense as their website contradicts their tech support. i'm going to get a pci e host crad and just try it when i am ready to make jump.

That's exactly why I added the question to this thread...

i think the digi chassis or the magma 7 slot 64 bit chassis wont work as there is no pci e host card offered.

http://www.magma.com/products/pci/7PCI/prices.html

gutting you chassis is slightly cheaper that buying a new one.

hope this helps!
