Pro tools 8 is Pro tools 8.. the dots are jus fix updates of PT8 so you'd be wasted time & adding frustration un-installing just to re-install the same thing plus the fact u'd probably need the update depending on which OS ur running...

Actually, you have it backwards. With PRE-fade metering, you CAN tell how much headroom as the meter is working on the real audio level. When using POST-fade, your meter is reading AFTER the fader, so an input can be completely clipped and over-driven, but the fader(say its at -10) has dropped the meter level by 10db(so you might be +9dbfs, but the meter is lying to you. Been doing this stuff for 30 years, so I suggest you just try it for a while and see what happens, and use your ears to balance things, not your eyes. In general, with any DAW, we find ourselves looking at screens and forgetting that we are working with audio. If your ears are not the best tool for getting balances down, then you might want to think about another career. Not being snobby here, just an honest observation.

I'll add my two cents to this comedy..

When you record down from your midi, make sure taht if you are going from stereo to mono you lower the output by at least 6dB.

And do yourself a favor.. in digital, yellow is the new red.

Stay in the lower end of the yellow for your peaks. Try for Green-N-Lean!

Its all part of the learning process(and after 30 years, I am still learning). That old habit of hitting the input as hot as possible is a tough habit to break, but the headroom of 24 bit recording(along with the dead silence of digital) makes for clean recording
