Sounds like bad install. Uninstall is and run the setup again. Make sure to include the sound library for the plug as well when asked during installation. Once installed correctly there's nothing to it. It should work without a problem.
Hope it helps.

i uninstalled and reistalled but to no avail. my limited expoerience tells me that plugins work with audio that is being tracked or audio that is playing back. how exactly does Xpand work? can i use the plug in to create wave files with the sounds in the library? im confused on this one.

Xpand is a Virtual Instrument plugin (hence the "Virtual Instrument" forum). Virtual instruments are MIDI plugins; they are the software versions of MIDI sound modules. They do not work like audio plugins to effect prerecorded audio data, they require MIDI data, either live from a MIDI controller (keybaord, electronic drums, etc), or recorded MIDI data on a MIDI or Instrument track. The output of the plugin can be recorded to wave files, but it needs the MIDI data to trigger it's audio.

If you are still confused, I would definitely recommend finding a book on MIDI basics and/or virtual instruments.

Also, you never mentioned what version of Pro Tools you are using (or what operating system and Digi hardware); Xpand only works with versions 7 and up.
