Default smart failure.. carbon copy cloner

hey guys!!!
Has anyone had experience with a system drive failing its S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics test. Word on the web is abandon ship asap. My problem is im on 6.4 on a g4 867 running HD accel with less than up to date plugs. They arent first versions but somewhere in the middle. If i use Carbon copy cloner and make a clone and then make it my start up disk, removing the OG start up disk, will protools and all my plugs still work? the authorizations are on the i-lok i get that, what im trying to aviod is having to go to every developers page and search the archives for older installers.

Does the drive have the ability to be report SMART status? Many drives (especially older ones) cannot.

On the other hand, if it DOES support SMART diags, yes. Jump ship. ASAP.

CCC is a great app, I use it often. MUCH fast than rebuilding a system. Your legal plugs should work fine, although I've had some clients who have tried to pull a fast one with illegal plugs and this maneuver.

I would make sure that you check the prefs in CCC to repair permissions on target, and I find that it works much better if you erase the destination first before you overwrite it.

Oh, and make sure you're logged on as the admin or root, or the OS may not copy correctly.

Good Luck!

actually i have disk warrior diagnostics running in the background. the error message pops up about once a day. dunno how accurate it is????
All the plugs are legit. the authorizations are stored on the i-lok anyway. my concern was finding the installers again.
thanks for the reply though!!!!!

if diskwarrior is telling you there's something wrong then you really should listen and stop using the system immediately (aside from doing a clone/backup)

CCC should work for most plugs however some will sense that the hard drive is different and that will make the system ID different and you'll have to re-authorise. as long as it's not something you do on a regular basis, most companies will realise that you are honestly having problems and re-authorise you without further question.

good luck

You can test how it all works by doing a CCC to a spare, erased external Firewire drive or drive partition. You can then boot from this by choosing it in the 'Startup Disk' dialogue.

You will then be able to confirm that the clone works as expected while still retaining the original drive. You are allowed to have multiple bootable partitions on your system at any one time.

Also check out Net Restore, which is made by the same company that makes CCC
I like it better because it makes an actual disk image of the drive that you
can save. We use it to make different setups of Pro Tools on various Mac OS's, etc.
Very easy to use...

There's a preference to save a disk image when using CCC as well.

I used a program called "Superduper"

It worked well to make a bootable copy of a drive.

Good luck, Rake
