External Fire Wire Hard Drive Suggestions
Looking for a great priced external fire wire drive. I will be running Pro Tools 6.1 with a Apple G5 1,6GHZ. I know Digi says use a SCSI drive, but I don't care to.
Thank you, Maker |

Hey. I know these drives aren't cheap, but they rock........ wiebetech.com
They also make a oxford 911 bridge that makes cheap IDE drives into firewire drives........... check it out. |

Re: External Fire Wire Hard Drive Suggestions
I've got 4 of the Glyph Companion Drive (60GB a piece). They're great for swapping sessions back and forth between our 2 studios. I've never had a problem with them and having been using for about a year now. I will say that I have never had a session bigger than 24 tracks though. So, couldn't say how they'd work if you were doing a HUGE project.

Re: External Fire Wire Hard Drive Suggestions
If you're looking for ultimate speed, I would get a FW800 box from either OWC (Other World Computing), or WiebeTech. I prefer the latter, because their case is aluminum, and dissipates heat a little better. Then, get an 8 MB cache Western Digital hard drive, maybe like a 200 or 250. The big ones like that are faster than the 80s and 120s, mainly because of higher areal density. The Western Digital 8 MB drives are nice and fast, plus they have 3 yr warranty.
I would also recommend making a 15-20 GB partition as the first partition for running the session(s) off of. The rest of it could be storage, or you could split it again. Don't split a big drive into 10 equal partitions and run sessions off each one, because the last few partitions will be significantly slower (they are at the inside of the platter). |

Re: External Fire Wire Hard Drive Suggestions
I have seven Western Digital drives and am quite pleased with them.
