Digi 002 Firewire 400speed not accepted by new Mac Pro Firewire 800speed ports
Hi.
I have been using my Digi 002 for a few years with an Apple G5 computer. I now have PT 8. Currently I have a Mac Pro (Desk Top) computer, running Mac OS X 10.6.2 with two(2) 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, processors and 14GB, of 1066 MHz DDR3 memory. Here is my first problem: The Digi 002 communicate using Firewire 400 speed cables, however the new Mac Pro computers no longer accepts Firewire 400speed cables. Instead only Firewire 800 speed cables can be connected to it. * My possible solutions are 1.Purchase some adaptors($15.each) from the USA, because there are none for sale in Nassau, Bahamas where I live. 2. Connect my Digi 002 to my external harddrive using a Firewire 400 cable. Then I am running a Firewire 800 cable from the external harddrive into the new Mac Pro. Here is my second problem: My new Mac Pro does not allow me to use my Digi 002 interface to play audio on the computer. When I open "System Preference" and go to hardware ,then I select "sound" I can see that the "Digidesign HW (002) " is recognized/available by the computer in the output and input list but when I select it in the sound output or input fields, I receive a message that says, "The selected device has no output controls". Inaddition, my Monitor Level knob, located just above the "ESC" button on the Digi002 and to the left of the mute button on the Digi 002 does not work any longer. If I open Pro Tools and try to adjust/use the monitor level button on my Digi 002 there is no change. It seems as tho the "monitor level " knob is stuck internally on extreme maxium volume level. As a result, I am having to adjust my monitor level via the Master track volume level by keeping it very low. Is there anyone out there successfully using a Digi 002 with a Mac Pro desk top running OS X 10.6.2 and its working OK. Can you give some suggestions? Or is there probably a problem with my Digi 002 hardware unit? |

Re: Digi 002 Firewire 400speed not accepted by new Mac Pro Firewire 800speed ports
Since the Mac Pro can support multiple SATA hard drives internally, there is no need to use an external firewire drive. In fact, SATA is faster than firewire. The only reason to use an external firewire drive in this case is for portability of your session between other systems. Therefore I would recommend the first option to get a FW800 to FW400 cable. They can be bought from the Apple Store (Belkin brand for around $29.95) or from www.macsales.com for much less.

I have a iMac 10.6.1, using the same setup. Just buy a 400 to 800 cable. Your "new mac pro" should have a 9 pin female firewire input, so make sure to get the correct cable, and yes it;s a belkin for 29.99 USD, works great.
